PM asks DCs to serve people with patriotism:Daily Sun

e in discharging responsibilities will not be tolerated,” Hasina said while inaugurating a three-day DC conference at Prime Minister’s Office in the capital. “You are not only a servant of the people…. devote yourselves to the welfare of people as a patriot,” she said, asking the DCs to remain alert so that people do not face any difficulty in getting service. The premier said the role of DCs is very important in building a progressive country free from hunger, poverty, militancy and communalism as they have to maintain a close contact with the people. Divisional Commissioners, PM’s advisers and ministers were also present at the programme. State minister for public administration Ismat Ara Sadek and cabinet secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan spoke at the inauguration. Khulna division commissioner Abdul Jalil, Madaripur DC GSM Zafarullah, Rangamati DC Mostafa Kamal and Panchagarh DC M Salauddin also addressed the programme. Giving a set of 24 directives, the premier asked the DCs to discharge their duties maintaining a close relation with the local public representatives to ensure good governance. She also asked them to immediately implement the centrally taken decisions for the country’s field-level development. “Lead from the front in expanding the information technology sector to the rural areas of the country,” the premier said. Laying importance on e-governance, Hasina said e-governance and its implementation is a key to establishing good governance at every sphere of the society. Transparency and accountability of the government have been established through e-governance, she said also asking the DCs to arrange more public hearing to that end. The premier also called on the DCs to maintain law and order in their respective areas rooting out militancy and terrorism and remain vigil against price spiral of essential commodities during the fasting month of Ramadan. She also asked the DCs to take stern action against the drug peddling and trafficking and misuse of drugs. Hasina also asked them to play their due role in protection the rivers and checking adulteration of food items. Describing her government’s plan to provide shelter to homeless people, she asked the DCs to take measures to provide houses to all homeless in their respective areas. “We do not want to let anybody remain homeless. If there is no khas land, we will purchase land to build houses for homeless persons,” she said, adding that her government wants to ensure civic amenities to the rural people. Speaking on the country’s education sector, the premier said that if her government can afford, she will take steps to provide free education at all levels. She asked the DCs for taking measures to check dropout and bring the dropout to the mainstream. The premier said universities would be set up in every district to make higher education available at local level. Listing her government’s development activities at various sectors, including agriculture, education, health, communication, power, food security, social safety net and ICT, the premier said the main aim of her government is to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021. The premier thanked the DCs for successfully holding the January 5 election despite various adversities. “Continuation of a government is needed for the desired development of country and for the first time, an elected government is performing its duty for the second consecutive time,” she said, adding that her government is working relentlessly to ensure overall welfare of the countrymen. The premier said without taking long-term development plan, desired development is not possible and her government for the first time adopted a perspective plan for 2010-2021 period and also implementing the sixth five-year plan. She also mentioned that the government is going to frame the seventh five-year plan and sought suggestions from DCs in resolving problems and exploring potentials of their respective areas.
