Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has found some important information on the sensational journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder through interrogation of witnesses to the incident. During interrogation of some witnesses, the RAB found that two accused in the case — Humayun Kabir and Palash Rudro Paul — concealed truth about the killing incident. Kabir and Palash Rudro were the security guards of the res
idential building where the journalist couple had been living and was killed in their rented flat there on February 11, 2012. On October 21, Md Wares Ali, investigation officer (IO) of the case, filed a petition with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, Dhaka seeking a seven-day remand for the two guards. The court, fixed October 30 for hearing on the remand plea. The IO in the remand petition said the RAB in its investigation found that Palash Rudro concealed truth about the incident to the president of the association of apartment owners Nur Nabi. It was mentioned in the plea that Nur Nabi heard the sound of cry between 5:00am and 5:15am on the night of the incident and he immediately asked guard Palash Rudra over phone to find out where the sound was coming from. But, the guard provided misleading information to Nur Nabi, saying the sound might have come from other apartments, not from our hours, the IO said. “As the RAB has found leads on the incident from the witnesses in the case, the two guards should be taken on remand for further interrogation,” he added Humayun Kabir, a general recording officer of Dhaka CMM court, said, “The IO filed the remand petition and the court fixed October 30 for hearing on the plea.” Although two and half a years have elapsed after the brutal killing of the journalist couple, there is still no significant progress in investigation into the incident. The RAB is now investigating the case as per the order of the High Court. Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of police was entrusted with the task to probe the incident. The RAB is yet to submit charge sheet in the case though they have recently got DNA report. The RAB earlier told journalists that they cannot submit charge sheet against the accused in time as they are waiting for report on DNA test conducted in the USA. The IO of the case submitted the progress report on the investigation into the journalist-couple murder on September 18. The RAB was supposed to submit charge sheet on the day but failed. Metropolitan magistrate Amit Kumar Dey asked RAB to record statements of the couple’s only son Mahir Sarwar Megh and Runi’s mother and brother, examine cell phone records of the suspected two guards. The court also sought final probe report from the IO by November 2. The court in its order also said although it placed the two guards on remand earlier but the IO can interrogate them again through permission from the court, if necessary. The court can also seek more information or evidence from journalists of different media and their leaders for the sake of proper investigation in the case. On April 26, 2012, the bodies of Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Nahar Runi were exhumed from Azimpur Graveyard and taken to the DMCH morgue for viscera test. On May 29 in 2012, RAB said that viscera test report shows that no sedative, poison or any chemical was used in killing of the journalist couple. The progress report also reads, “The RAB sent different types of samples to the USA for DNA test in a bid to unveil the clue and motive behind the double murder. The RAB got the test report recently and are now analysing the DNA report.” Though the IO said they got the DNA report recently, but he did not mention specific date of getting the report from the USA. He also mentioned in the progress report that they collected statements of at least 150 witnesses, including the victims’ relatives and colleagues under 161 of the CrPC. When asked about the delay in investigation, Md Wares Ali, also assistant director of investigation and forensic wing of RAB, denied making any comment on the matter. Sagar, news editor at TV channel Maasranga, and Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed at their rented flat in the capital’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012.
