BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia addresses a rally organised by the BNP-led 20-party alliance at Kanchpur Balur Math in Narayanganj yesterday. Photo: BNP BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday questioned why it would be an offence if people possess illegal arms as the ruling Awami League men “already have such firearms”. “Armed Awami League activists have been walking around in public. The government it
self has supplied those illegal arms to its men who are involved in killings and extortion. Now, if people also take up arms, why should they be barred as both sides would be in possession of illegal arms?” She was addressing a mammoth public rally at Kanchpur Balur Math in Narayanganj. The BNP-led 20-party alliance hosted the rally as part of its ongoing campaign to drum up public support for holding a fresh election under a non-party administration. “Stop right away supplying illegal arms to your [Hasina] men. Recover all illegal arms. Otherwise, the consequences would be very dangerous,” warned the BNP chief. She did not mention any timeframe for starting an anti-government movement. Khaleda, however, said they will enforce tougher agitations immediately after any probable announcement of energy price hike. The 20-party chief called upon people to take to the streets with whatever they can grab when she would soon announce a movement to force the government to hold a fresh election. Advertisement “This time around, all of us will take to the streets under any circumstances, no matter how long it takes, be it in the winter, summer or the rainy season, to oust the government,” she said. “We won't shed tears any more, not let the oppressor government kill us. We are ready to brave bullets. Face the movement on streets if you [government] have the courage.” Reiterating her call to hold an inclusive election, she said otherwise, the government would have to face dire consequences. “Bad days are ahead of you [Awami League men]. Time will come when you will not be able to come out of your houses.” Accusing the government of politicising the civil administration, she said it is now “trying to remove the brilliant public servants.” Khaleda also warned judges of getting strict punishment from Allah on the Judgment Day for “not delivering right judgments” in the cases against opposition men. “You should fear Allah, not Hasina.” Referring to the seven-murder in Narayanganj in April, the BNP chief claimed the government was behind the gruesome murders. She alleged that Colonel Ziaul Ahsan of Rapid Action Battalion was “one of the masterminds” of the crime and he has been not arrested yet. Pointing to the recent arrest of a female who allegedly planned to kill Hasina, the former premier said it was nothing but “a drama and a cooked up story.” “There is no need to kill Hasina. It's Allah who would punish her for her misdeeds and involvement in killings of innocent people. She [Hasina] will bring about her own downfall.” On the oil spill in the Sundarbans, Khaleda said the government wants to destroy the world famous heritage site. “There will be no investigation into this crime, none will be punished,” she added. Blasting Hasina, she said the prime minister's family members do not have any love for the country as many of them live abroad, married foreigners. “They [Hasina and her family members] have been laundering money outside the country.” On Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said Mujib did not want country's independence for fear of being hanged by the then Pakistani government. “It was Shaheed Ziaur Rahman who had proclaimed the country's independence risking his life and those of his family members.” Top alliance leaders addressed the rally. As the rally venue was near the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways, traffic on those roads came to a near-halt for several hours from 2:00pm. The opposition men partly occupied the highway, causing suffering to people, specially women and children. Many bus passengers were seen walking with their luggage towards their destinations.
