Cabinet asks all to remain alert to avert unrest in RMG sector:Daily Sun

The government has asked all concerned to stay alert to avert any kind of unrest in readymade garment sector, one of the country’s highest foreign currency earning sectors. The cabinet at a meeting on Monday also expressed satisfaction over successfully tackling the probable garment unrest centring the wages and festival allowances for the workers of Tuba Group. Sources said Commerce Minister To
fail Ahmed raised the issue in the meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Expressing satisfaction over successfully tackling the matter, the minister said it has been proved that a quarter has long been trying to create unrest in the sector. “A quarter has provoked the workers not to draw wages even after the offer,” said the source quoting the commerce minister as saying. “The way BGMEA gives the wages and allowances, it would have been better if it would take the initiative earlier,” he said, claiming that the eid festival was celebrated smoothly except the Tuba unrest and launch mishap. The commerce minister also urged the government to look into the roles of the labour leaders, who maintain a link with foreign countries. Sources said State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu proposed bringing an amendment to the Labour Act so that the workers could get their benefits within a short period of time. Chunnu said many workers, who appeared as complainants, could not run the cases with the labour courts due to long process. As a result, the owners get verdicts in their favour. “I request the cabinet to bring an amendment to complete the case within a short period of time,” he said. The minister said as per the labour law, a terminated worker has to file a case within three months of dismissal from job while the owner is bound to provide the benefit within seven working days or the worker has the right to file the suit with the labour court. Sources said the other ministers lauded the proposal. Meanwhile, the cabinet asked the foreign ministry to take diplomatic efforts to help restore peace in Gaza in the light of Bangladesh’s strong position on the Palestine issue. “The cabinet has asked the foreign ministry to take necessary efforts in the light of Bangladesh’s strong position on the Palestine issue,” Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters at a briefing. Condemning the Israeli attacks on the Gaza strip and expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people once again, he said the cabinet called for an immediate stop to the killing and destruction in the Gaza strip. Earlier on July 14, the cabinet had condemned the Gaza attacks. “This is the worst example of human rights violation, especially the indiscriminate killing of women and children.” “The cabinet observed that it is regrettable that such violence is being perpetrated by Israel in the same year that the world has adopted as the international year of solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the secretary said. “Bangladesh has been with Palestine and will be in the future. The cabinet has demanded that the lawful rights of the Palestinian people should be restored,” he said. At the meeting, the cabinet was informed about the visit of the state minister for foreign affairs to Cairo in March to attend a joint meeting of the Arab League and the United Nations, where the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was adopted.
