Flood situation deteriorates in northern dists:Daily Sun

s were inundated in the northern part of the country on Wednesday following continuous rise in water levels of the major rivers. Sufferings of thousands of people affected by the flood in the northern districts mounted on Wednesday as eight rivers were flowing above the danger marks at several points. Thousands of flood victims are leading a miserable life with inadequate relief, locals said. The river Ghagot at Gaibandha point, Brahmaputra at Chilmari point, Jamuna at Bahadurabad, Sariakandi and Sirajganj points, Atrai at Baghabari point, Dhaleswari at Elasin point, Lakhya at Lakhpur point, Surma at Kanaighat and Sunamganj points and Kangsha at Jariajanjail point were flowing above their respective danger levels by 26cm, 13cm, 34cm, 67cm, 10cm, 57 cm, 11cm, 13cm, 45cm and 36cm and 43cm on Wednesday, said Ripon Karmakar, assistant engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC). In a flood bulletin, the FFWC on Wednesday said all the major river systems are showing a rising trend. It also said the water level of Brahmaputra is likely to start falling from tomorrow and Jamuna from the day after tomorrow. The water levels of the Ganges-Padma, the Meghna and the rivers around Dhaka city are likely to rise in the next 72 hours. In Kurigram, at least one lakh people were marooned in the low-lying areas of 25 unions of Nageshwari, Sadar, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Rajibpur upazilas. Besides, transplanted Aman seedlings and vegetables on 12 thousand acres of land have gone under floodwater. The authorities have shut 50 schools in the district for unavoidable circumstances. The deputy commissioner has provided 100 tonnes of rice and Tk 1 lakh for the flood-affected people. In Sirajganj, at least three lakh people were marooned in 50 unions of nine upazilas as the river Jamuna was flowing over danger level at Sirajganj point. Sadar, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Shahzadpur, Chowhali and Tarash are among the most affected upazilas in the district. The affected people are passing a miserable life without relief. Crops on thousands acres of land have gone under water, local sources said. The deputy commissioner has provided three tonnes of rice for Sadar upazila, five tonnes of rice for Belkuchi upazila, 10 tonnes of rice for Shahzadpur upazila and 10 tonnes of rice for Kazipur upazila and Tk 10,000 for each upazila. In Gaibandha, fresh areas of Sundarganj, Fulchari, Saghata and Sadar upazilas were flooded as the water levels of the rivers Ghaghot, Brahmaputra and Korotoa rose. Different crops on 456 hectares of land under 18 unions of the upazilas have gone under water. The deputy commissioner has provided 100 tonnes of rice and Tk one lakh for the flood-affected families. In Bogra, 21,000 people were marooned in the areas of Kajla, Kornibari, Bohail, Chaluabari, Chandanbaisha, Kamalpur, Kutubpur, Hatoshpur and Sariakandi Sadar unions under Sariakandi upazila as the water level of the river Jamuna rises further.
