Locals said many dishonest persons supply fake medicines to Mitford whol
esale market and other markets. Some traders stocked their stores with those medicines. During a visit to the business hub, it was found that dishonest traders have been manufacturing fake medicines in factories and selling those to the markets in the areas. Fake medicine factories have mushroomed in Jinjira, Kushirbagh, Mandail, Bamonshur, Kalindi of Keraniganj and Amir Medicine Market, Bangshal, Chowkbazar, Kamalbagh, Islambagh, Begumbazar, Rahmatganj, Debidas Ghat, Boroktara, Chotokatra, Hazaribag, Lalbagh and Kamrangirchar, sources said. They further said fake medicine factories are mushrooming in the area in a bid to flood Mitford medicine markets with fake medicines. Most of the fake factories are located in the largest wholesale medicine markets of the country. Locals alleged the fake medicine manufacturers are allegedly run illegal business under the nose of law-enforcement agencies. Counterfeit medicines were being manufactured in the factories and sold the drugs to Mitford wholesale markets. Afterwards, the medicines are supplied to different medicine markets in the country. Local sources said the adulterated medicines flooded the markets in Mitford and Babubazar areas. The markets are Yousuf Market, Ali Market, Samiti Market, Nayna Market, Khan Market, Nurpur Market, Dhaka Market, Sureshwar Market and Nupur Market. Reliable sources said Mitford is the countrys biggest wholesale medicine market and the nationwide marketing chain of medicine is controlled from here. On September 10, a mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion seized a large quantity of spurious drugs during their raids on two factories and three stores in Mitford and Keraniganj areas. The two warehouses and a factory are located at Amir Medicine Market near Babubazar Bridge in Mitford area while another warehouse at a nearby building. Another factory is on the second floor of his three-storey building in Kushiarbagh of Keraniganj. Ostocal D of SK+F, Bextrum Gold of Beximco, Neuro-B of Square and Fluclox of ACI were among the fake drugs and the mobile court also seized foils, labels, packages and medicine making equipment from the factories. During the drive, the RAB also arrested Mohammad Russell, 30, owner of the factories and warehouses. Russell told the court that he had been producing Fluclox 500mg antibiotic capsule of ACI at home and that he used to buy foil and packages from a local printing press. While ACI sells a packet of such capsules for Tk 350, Russell used to charge Tk 200 for it, said Executive Magistrate Anwar Pasha who led the drive. He further said, Earlier, Russell had served two years in jail for similar offence and his factories and warehouses had been sealed off two years back. After his release, he began dealing in fake drugs again. Meanwhile, the RAB also recently busted many other factories in the other parts of the capital, including Rampura, Gulshan, Badda and Paltan areas. On July 9, a mobile court led by RAB members busted a medicine factory in Topkhana and jailed its owner for two years for making fake medicines. Owner Aminul Ehsan used his experience as an employee of a pharmaceutical company and had been running the heinous business for 10 years. On April 1, the Rab in a drive busted an illegal homeopathy medicine factory and sealed off it in Badda area.
