15 teachers, staff hurt in V-Day attack in Rangpur:Daily Star

At least 15 teachers and officials of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) were injured in a clash between two groups of teachers and officials of the university yesterday. Around 11:00am, teachers, students and officials of the BRUR, led by Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof AKM Nurun Nabi, brought out a procession on the campus to celebrate the Victory Day and paraded the adjacent areas,
said witnesses and university sources. After placing floral wreaths at the university Shaheed Minar, they held a meeting on the Victory Day at the same place. While the rally was going on, another group of teachers, students and officials of the university, under the banner of "Begum Rokeya University Teachers' Association", brought out another procession and went to the Shaheed Minar for placing floral wreaths. The teachers' association members then snatched the microphone from Umor Faruk, assistant professor of Accounting and Information Systems Department, while he was presenting the key note paper, witnesses said. Some unruly men, at that time, hurled brick chips at the VC, teachers, students and officials, leaving at least five people, including Assistant Registrar of the university Tariqul Islam, injured. Both groups then locked in a clash that left 10 more people of each group injured. Advertisement Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, the VC held a press conference at his residence. He condemned the attack and alleged that anti-liberation forces were involved in the assault. Refuting the allegation, Saidul Haque, president of the teachers association, claimed that VC backed men attacked them when they reached the Shaheed Minar for placing wreaths.
