The nation steps into the New Year 2015 today with cautious hope, but much uncertainty amid a transition from peaceful situation to threat of turmoil as political heat and tension are growing fast. The New Year 2015 begins today amid a two-day hartal called by the Jamaat-e- begining from Wednesday in protest against the death sentence awarded to Jamaat leader A T M Azharul Islam for his crimes ag
ainst humanity during Liberation War in 1971. Besides, on the eve of the new year BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at a press conference on Wednesday reiterated her demand for fresh parliamentary polls under a neutral government and placed a seven –point demand to the that end. On the other hand the Government of Sheikh Hasina is bent on carrying on with the developments process and holding any election only in due course in 2019. The government is also determined to face-off violent movement and anarchy with an iron hand. Against this backdrop, observers feel that very tough days lie ahead for the people as the political situation is likely to create crisis again over election-time government. It is the common people who are likely to continue to be the victims of the political confrontation and suffer most. Ruling Awami League-led government is set to welcome the New Year making a significant success in diplomacy, drawing foreign investment, starting construction of Padma Bridge and holding trial of war criminals. The AL-led alliance assumed office for the consecutive second time through the January 5 elections, boycotted by the major opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Instead of contesting the polls, the BNP and its allies issued threats to foil the polls and carried out mayhem but the Awami League along with some other parties contested the polls in line with the constitution. Assuming the office, Hasina took the steer firmly to restore peace, put under a serious threat over the mayhem carried out by the BNP-Jamaat centering the national polls. Interestingly BNP’s absence in parliament, Jatiya Party-led by Hussain Muhammad Ershad emerged as the major opposition, keeping Khaleda Zia out of parliament since the country’s stepping into practicing democracy in 1991. Amid the BNP’s claim of unconstitutional parliament and illegal government, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and treasury bench lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury were elected president of Common Wealth Parliamentary Association and Inter-Parliamentary Union respectively in October. The victory in the elections to two top posts of the two international organizations put the country as well the as the incumbent government in firm footing in the global arena. “Winning two international posts within a span of seven days is a rare feet for the country,” Hasina said . Political analysts say that popularity of Sheikh Hasina continues to increase though a section of her Awami League seems tainting its glorious image over some leaders’ alleged involvement with misdeeds. Intra party feud, misdeeds of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League and excessive talks by some ministers repeatedly embarrassed the government. Commoners say that her acceptance at home and abroad seems brightening day by day for her roles in taking the country forward, ensuring socio-economic development amid political unrest, trying the war criminals and curbing the violence and militant activities. The world leaders also praised her for playing significant roles in attaining economic growth amid the worldwide recession, achieving millennium development goal, reducing poverty and curbing militancy with iron fist. Despite success stories, Hasina government is in bitter controversy over the role of the main opposition Jatiya Party, as critics’ term the party as ‘puppet’ of the government. Ershad became a special envoy to the premier while three JP lawmakers took oath as ministers. As a global leader, Hasina has been maintaining good relations with all countries, especially Russia, China, Japan and India. People say that they have not seen any of the past rulers maintaining close relations simultaneously with the four countries. They say the other heads of the government might maintain relations with Russia, China but they have not seen anyone maintaining cordial relations with the four major countries. Raising voice over the Israel’s atrocities on Gaza, Hasina also drew the attention of the global leaders requesting them to come forward in stopping such heinous attack on the unarmed Palestinian and urged the United Nations to act strongly over the issue. General people also praised Hasina for her prompt action against a senior minister Abdul Latif Siddique for his alleged derogatory remarks on the prophet, hajj and Tabligh Jamaat. The global leaders seem happy with Hasina government’s goal for turning the country a middle income one by 2021 and a developed one by 2041. As part of the process, Hasina after assuming office for the consecutive second time, visited China and Japan and she was assured by them of more investments to materialize her dream in turning the country a middle income and developed one by 2021 and 2041 respectively. For her efforts, many organizations including the UN, accolade Hasina with prestigious awards in recognition to her work. Hasina has received the ‘South-South Award’ for her government’s achievement in alleviating poverty in Bangladesh. She got recognition titled ‘Peace Tree’ from Unesco for her tireless efforts to promote girls’ education in Bangladesh. Besides, the government passed the much-talked 16th amendment bill to the constitution empowering parliament to remove Supreme Court judges in case of professional misconducts or incapacity. The country also witnessed several verdicts by ICT against the war criminals, including Jamaat Ameer Matiur Rahman, assistant general secretary Kamaruzzaman and Mir Quashem Ali and Azharul Islam. Though the government has been moving forward with development activities, the countrymen are in concern as the two major camps——AL and BNP—are set to face each other in the upcoming New Year to establish supremacy over each other. The BNP-led 20-party alliance has decided to wage a tough movement marking the January 5 as black day while the ruling AL-led 14-party alliance terming the day as victory day of democracy has decided to foil any sort of political action. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been asking the government to arrange a mid term polls under a neutral administration, terming the incumbent government illegal. Turning down the demand the government has been saying that the next parliamentary polls will be held in 2019 under incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after the completion of its full tenure. General people are in grave concern over the possibility of political confrontation between the two major parties in the coming days.
