Crimes are on the rise in the country as the police are engaged in containing violence-sabotage and the criminals remain beyond their reach. According to sources, grisly murders are being committed one after another at different places, but the killers go scot-free, because cops are busy mostly with tackling political violence during blockade-hartal. In the opinion of the analysts, cops are unab
le to give proper attention to conducting investigation into the incidents of murder, rape, robbery, snatching, extortion, abduction and drug trade, as the investigation officers at the field level have to accomplish the task of resisting violence and subversion. And taking advantage of this situation, the criminals are speeding up their activities. Non-stop blockade has been continuing across the country for 71 days. During the month of January and February, 638 murders took place in the country. Besides, 110 people were abducted and 120 incidents of robbery occurred. In the last two months, 26,000 cases have been filed, including 1,400 for violence. In recent days, a number of sensational murders were committed across the country. But there is no progress in investigation into any of these cases. Moreover, investigation has been slowed down in other criminal cases including murders. Against this backdrop, incidents of child lifting, murder, opening fire, and tender manipulation are taking place every day. There has been a serious uproar across the country over the abduction and killing of nine-year-old Abu Sayeed. On Monday night, the dead body of a child was recovered from a bag in a running bus at Banani in the capital. The six-year-old boy Shahidul Islam Emon was abducted from his home at Joydevpur in Gazipur on March 15. Tk 2 lakh was demanded as ransom from his father. And when money was not paid, the criminals killed the boy and left him in the bus. Earlier, a woman named Sumi of Fakirapool in the city was killed and seven pieces of her body were found on March 10, but all the killers remain beyond the reach of the police. Police officials admitted that the routine works of police have been slowed down due to the action against violence, but the law enforcers including the police are fully alert. State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said yesterday that there is no more blockade related violence in the country now and hence there is no reason for the law and order situation to deteriorate. All agencies including police have been asked to ensure normalcy of the law and order situation and they are working for that round the clock. (With inputs from SM Azad.)
