Adoring cricket fans took to the streets across the country on Tuesday to celebrate the historic win of Bangladesh over England in the ICC Cricket World Cup that ensured the Tigers’ quarterfinals berth. Cricket-mad people of all ages, political hues and socio-cultural organisations marched in colourful processions in many places in the capital and elsewhere to mark the show-stopping performance of
the Tigers in the blue-riband event. Our DU Correspondent reports: Bangladesh Chhatra League on Dhaka University campus celebrated the nerve-wrecking win of the national cricket team that booked its berth in the quarter-finals in the global extravaganza. The student wing of the ruling Awami League brought out a gala procession from Madhu’s canteen and gathered at anti-terrorism sculpture Raju at TSC roundabout. Wearing team jerseys, blowing whistles, playing drams and waving flags, BCL activists shouted slogans like ‘Bangladesh! Bangladesh! Bravo Bangladesh!’ Talking to journalists, BCL president HM Badiuzzaman Sohag said, “Tigers’ victory against stronger England proved that they have the ability to fight in the final. We’re also waiting to see Bangladesh in the final.” Students and pedestrians in their multitudes thronged the areas from Shahbagh to Doel Square and Nilkhet to Shaheed Minar to join in the celebrations. The ruling Awami League on Tuesday brought out joyous rallies in Dhaka and elsewhere of the country to celebrate the cricket team’s successes. To celebrate the win, AL and its associate bodies brought out rallies at various spots of the capital and elsewhere of the country. Dhaka city unit Awami League and its associate bodies brought out a massive rally in the capital at 12:00noon. Carrying national flags and colorful banners and festoons, hundreds of party activists and commoners participated in the rally. The rally started from the National Press Club and paraded various streets before ending at Bangabandhu Avenue. City unit AL leaders Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury, Shahidul Islam Milon, GM Atik, Jamal Uddin, among others, joined the rally. Jatiya Sramik League also brought out a rally from the Press Club and it ended at Bangabandhu Avenue after parading various streets. At Mirpur, AL brought out a victory procession, led-by lawmaker Sabina Akter Tuhin and Jubo League leader Amzad Hossain, to celebrate Bangladesh cricket team’s victory. Thousands of activists and commoners took part in the procession. Also, AL and its associate bodies brought out rallies in other parts of the capital. Cricket-loving people also joined the celebrations across the country. Meanwhile, the BNP-led 20-party alliance also brought out a procession all over to celebrate the cricket team’s amazing victory. After a long absence in streets during its ongoing anti-government movement, the party brought out a procession in the capital. Carrying the miniatures of the national flag, leaders and activists of BNP, its front and associate organisations and professional bodies brought out street processions outside the National Press Club in the morning. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Shawkat Mahmud, Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad convener Ruhul Amin Gazi and BNP assistant office secretary Asadul Karim Shaheen were, among others, the processionists. However, top leaders of the alliance components were not found in the street programmes. But the BNP-led alliance also brought out processions in different areas across the country. Meanwhile, law-enforcers picked up BNP sports affairs secretary Raihan Amin Rony from in front of the party chairperson’s Gulshan office in the afternoon when he was hanging a banner inscribed with greetings of the Bangladesh Cricket Team for their win over England. The BNP-led alliance relaxed its hartal for 12 hours from 6:00am till 6pm on Tuesday for celebrating Bangladesh cricket team’s victory against England in a decisive match of the ICC Cricket World Cup. BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said in a press release on Monday night announced their procession across the country marking the victory.
