160 of BNP-led alliance face trial:Daily Sun

  As many as 160 leaders and activists of BNP and its allies including BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Amanullah Aman, former opposition chief whip Zainal Abdin Farroque and JAGPA chief Shafiul Alam Pradhan now face trial. d Pradhan in a case filed with Paltan Thana under Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. On the other hand, charges were framed against 14 people including Aman in a separate case filed with Airport Thana under the Penal Code. Thus, 160 leaders and activists of BNP and its alliance partners now face trial. Of them, 47 did not appear in the court and warrant for their arrest was issued. The date for deposition of the witnesses of the case filed with Paltan Thana has been fixed for September 25 while that of the case filed with Airport Thana for November 20. The date was fixed on Monday by Magistrate Tareq Mainul Islam of the number 6 Speedy Trial Tribunal Dhaka for Paltan Thana case and by Dhaka Metropitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque for Airport Thana case. A prayer for discharging the accused from the case was rejected and charges were framed. Of them 100 accused including Aman, Rezvi appeared before the court on Monday. Defence counsels filed time petition on behalf of the remaining 47 accused. But the court rejected the petition and issued arrest warrants against them. Earlier, the court read out the charges in the presence of the accused. However, the accused persons pleaded not guilty and sought acquittal. Sanaullah Mia, Masud Ahmed Talukder, Mohsin Mia and Mosleh Uddin Jashim appeared for the accused persons. On March 11, last year, vandalism and cocktail explosition took place at a rally in front BNP office at Naya Paltan. On this incident, police filed two seperate cases against 154 people under the Penal Code and Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. In both cases, same people were made accused. Meanwhile, on March 24 of last year, charge-sheets were submitted in the court against 148 leaders and workers of 18-party alliance under section 4/5 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. As one of them died, charge was framed against 147. It was said in the charge-sheet that the accused created obstacle to traffic movement on the road in front of BNP’s central office at Nayapaltan, Mashjid Goli and Top Collection Goli, and vandalised government and private offices as well as vehicles. They blasted 18/20 cocktails one after another and created panic by setting fire to tire, sacks and paper at seven points on the road. When police intercepted, they hurled cocktail at police and tried to snatch arms from police. After that police entered the BNP central office. From there also accused hurled two cocktails on the police. At that time, police seized 10 live hand bombs-2 from the bathroom on second floor, 2 from bathroom of conference room and 4 from nearby Juba Dal central office at the 3rd floor. On the other hand, on August 24, 2011, police submitted the charge sheet before the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate court against Aman and 13 others. The case was filed with Airport Police Station on September 29, 2009 on charges of creating violence and obstructing law enforcers from discharging their duties in Airport area of the capital. According to the charge sheet, a group of BNP leaders and activists gathered in airport area to receive Amanullah Aman when he returned home from Thailand on September 29, 2009.
