  People suffer from various non-communicable diseases like renal failure, liver complications, heart ailments, diabetes and sleep apnea due to high intake of alcohol and other types of addictive drugs, say experts. They opined that smoking, lack of physical activity and mental stress are the major risk factors in heart diseases. “A section of people in society take alcohol as part of their lifest
yle and are exposed to liver and stomach complications with neurological problems.” A band of public-health experts have sounded a note of caution regarding intake of alcoholic drugs because people in the 20-60 age bracket take such drugs for their refreshments that later lead to various health risks. Noted haematologist Prof Dr Swapan Chandra said those who take alcohol for long will experience liver complications as livers get enlarged with fat that they lead to digestive problems. “Thousands of people spend a huge amount of money for their recovery from liver ailments in which infection takes place due to huge alcohol intake for maintaining their lifestyle in the so-called society,” he added. Smoking causes lung cancer, but people take tobacco in various ways, Prof Swapan said. “People experience other fatal diseases because of addiction.” A senior professor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University said the young generation are getting addicted to alcoholic drugs at their early stage. “A potential youth loses his or her productivity at an early stage for becoming addicted to narcotics with alcohol, but they could give more things to their families as well as society,” he observed. A statistic of Narcotics Control Department reveals that around 5 million people are now addicted to various narcotics here, making burdens on their families. “Now think how addiction is destroying potentialities in the youth.” Contacted, Dr Jafarullah, director of the directorate general of health services, advocated an aggressive campaign to make people aware of the danger of addiction and find preventive measures to this end. Without keeping in good health, no one can be able to move forward to do something better for family or even himself or herself, he lamented.
