Narcotics dept not equipped to combat drug peddlers:Daily Sun

Members of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) often face the risk of their life during drives against drug peddlers as they are not equipped with arms necessary for such operation. DNC officials and employees very often fall victim to attacks by armed drug peddlers when they carry out drives at different places of the country to recover illicit drugs. A DNC official said drug peddlers carry fi
re arms and so it’s not possible for them to conduct drives. “The authorities should provide us arms in properly discharging our duty,” he added. A good many DNC members came under attacks by organised armed drug peddlers several times during their drives in different areas of the country. In May, 2012, some DNC officials were attacked by drug peddlers during drive at Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj. Drug peddlers stabbed four DNC officials at that time. Lutfor Rahman, assistant director (operation) of DNC, told daily sun “Drugs peddlers and traffickers are organized and they carry firearms to resist any attempt to catch them. “DNC officials and employees are losing interest in discharging their duties as they are frequently attacked by armed drug peddlers and traffickers,” he added. He also said, “Most of the time we do not get police assistance in short a notice in carrying out a drive, which give opportunity to drug peddlers to flee.” “According to information provided by our sources, sometimes, we have to conduct drives instantly. If we fail to do so drug peddlers manage to flee. But we have to give requisition for police assistance at least one day before any drive” he added. The DNC made draft principles of collection and use of arms for DNC officials. Daily sun obtained a copy of the draft of “Collection and Use of Arms 2013. According to the draft, DNC has 1,283 officials and employees. Of them, 826 are working at field level and they need at least 625 arms to carry out drive against drug peddlers. Md Bazlur Rahman, Director General (DG) of DNC, said a five-member committee is now scrutinising the draft arms principles and they will soon finalise the draft and submit it to the ministry concerned.
