At least 20 people were killed and 10 others injured critically in separate road accidents at different places including Naogaon, Tangail, Manikganj, Faridpur and Pirojpur on Wednesday. Sources said a fatal collision between a truck and a human hauler took place in Tangail, leaving nine people dead. Besides, four people were killed in Naogaon, two in Manikganj and one each in Faridpur and Pirojpu
r. Police said a truck rammed a human hauler on Tangail-Mymensingh highway road at Ashura in Madhupur upazila of Tangail, leaving nine people dead and four others injured. Locals said four women and two children were among the deceased in the collision between two vehicles. The deceased were identified as Salma Begum, 30, her sons Sadiqul, 10, and Samiul, 8, and Rohima Begum, 30, Habibur Rahman, 50, Firoza Begum, 45, her grandson Sajid, 4, driver Abdul Kader, 60, and Hena Akhter, 35, from Ghatail upazila. “A speedy truck hit a human hauler in Ashura area at about 12:30pm,” said Majibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Madhupur Police Station. Three people died on the spot while five others succumbed to their injuries at local health complex and another died on way to a hospital in Mymensingh. He further said, “The deceased were all passengers of the three-wheeler.” “We seized the killer truck, but the driver managed to flee the scene,” he added. The bodies were sent to Madhupur Health Complex. The injured were undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. In Naogaon, four people, including a minor girl, were killed when a Rajshahi-bound truck hit a rickshaw in Hapania area on Naogaon-Rajshahi road in Sadar upazila around 11:30am. The dead were identified as Abdus Sattar, 40, his daughter, Khusi, 8, Mohammad Sohel, 18, and rickshaw-puller Saim Uddin, 30. Abbas Uddin, a sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station, said, “The truck hit the auto-rickshaw near the Hapania Madrasa intersection, leaving the four dead on the spot. The injured were taken to hospital.” “All the four victims died on the spot.” Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Naogaon Sadar hospital for autopsy. Police seized the truck from Mohadevpur upazila. In Manikganj, two people were killed as a concrete-laden truck fell into a ditch after a bailey bridge fell apart in Singair upazila. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. In Faridpur, a traffic inspector, Saroj Kumar Roy, was killed after getting sandwiched between two trucks in front of Peyarpur Primary School at about 10:00am. In Pirojpur, a helper of a bus driver was crushed under the vehicle at Ikri in Bhandaria upazila when he fell down from it. The victim identified as Shah Jalal, 28, died on the spot. Three people were killed at other places. Meanwhile, a four-member committee was formed on Wednesday to investigate the reasons for Tuesday’s road accident in Rajapur of Jhalakati that left nine people dead and 19 others injured.
