Goyeshwar Chandra Roy BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy was placed on a three-day remand on Friday in the cases filed over Bakshibazar violence and attack on an Awami League (AL) lawmaker. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tasruzzaman granted the remand for the BNP leader when Shahbagh police produced him before the court on Friday afternoon, seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation
. Goyeshwar was shown arrested in the cases filed for motor car vandalism and attempting to murder Awami League lawmaker Chhobi Biswas. Earlier on Wednesday night, two cases were filed with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection. Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the BNP leader from a party worker’s house in Siddeshwari road area in the capital early Friday. His arrest came after the Bakshibazar clash between AL and BNP activists, and an attack on the ruling party MP. Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo, BNP central leaders Habib-un-nabi Khan Sohel and Azizul Bari Helal, among others, were made accused in the case. But Goyeshwar had not been named in the case. In response to Chhatra League’s threat to stall Khaleda Zia’s Gazipur rally, Goyeshwar earlier said, “We will certainly go to Gazipur on December 27. Rallies will be held countrywide if we are not allowed to hold the rally there. Protests will spread across the country if Gazipur road is blocked.” Meanwhile, most of the BNP and its front organisation leaders and activists are in panic after the arrest of Goyeshwar Chandra Roy. According to some BNP activists, most of the party leaders and activists have already gone into hiding to avoid arrest. Besides, tension is mounting over holding rallies by BNP and Awami League on Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground in Gazipur. According to BNP activists, police also arrested several BNP and its front organisation leaders and activists from different parts of the capital, including Turag and Sabujbagh Police Stations, but could not name them. Police also raided the house of Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel in Shantinagar at the same time. Clashes erupted between the ruling party and opposition BNP supporters in front of a special court in Bakshibazar on Wednesday before BNP chief Khaleda Zia appeared there for a hearing on her corruption charges. During the clash, the car of Netrakona-1 MP Chhobi Biswas was set ablaze while he suffered injuries to the head and had to be hospitalised. Police and the Awami League blamed the BNP and Chhatra Dal activists for the incident. Twenty-three people were named as accused in the case concerning the attack on the MP while about 60 unidentified people were also booked. The other case accused 70 persons with names and another 30 to 40 unidentified people.
