An emergency shutdown at the Bibiyana gas field in Habiganj for five hours triggered a huge drop in gas supply in different parts of the country for long 12 hours till Wednesday noon. Gas production at the major gas field, operated by US Company Chevron Bangladesh, remained shut between 2:00am and 7:00am due to a technical glitch, triggering gas crisis in different parts of the capital and elsewh
ere of the country. However, Chevron Bangladesh Limited in a statement said the Bibiyana Gas Plant was shut at 1:44am on Wednesday as a precautionary measure following a ‘false alarm’ in the smoke detection system. Chevron said the operation of the gas field resumed at 4:00am on the same day. “Chevron informed us that they were forced to initiate an ‘emergency shutdown’ at the Bibiyana gas field due to a technical glitch at 2:00am” a Petrobangla official said. He said the gas field resumed its gas production at 7:00am. But the pressure of gas at the consumer-end returned to normalcy in the noon after the gas pressure increased from the source, the official added. It’s the second ‘emergency shutdown’ at the Bibiyana gas field in last two month, the official said, adding, Petrobangla has asked Chevron to fix any glitches the field might have to avoid such incident. Bibiyana gas field is now supplying around 1000mmcfd of gas out of the total 2600mmcfd gas supply in the national grid, he said. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last month inaugurated an extension project of the Bibiyana gas filed that would increase gas supply from the field from early next year. The field will supply additional 120mmcfd gas to the national grid once the extension project is completed, officials concerned said. “Our consumers faced gas supply shortage till the noon due to the disruption in gas supply from the Bibiyana gas field from 2:00am,” Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited managing Director Nowshad Islam told daily sun. He said the Titas gas consumes around 600mmcfd gas from Bibiyana gas field. Residents in different part of the capital including Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Bashundhara, Rampura, Badda, Uttara, Tongi and Jatrabari suffered due to the disruption in gas supply. Residents at Dhanmondi and some other areas were seen taking their breakfast in different restaurants finding no other alternatives. Besides, many industrial units resumed their production in the noon after the gas supply was restored.
