Around 9,000 cases were filed against leaders of BNP and its other 19 allies in last two years. Most of these cases arising out of political violence were lodged under Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. Police have already submitted charge-sheets in around 4,000 cases. The remaining cases remain dysfunctional for lack of charge-sheets. Just one week ago, Police Headquarters sent direction to field-level
officials to revive those cases. The situation which worked behind passing such order is that Khaleda Zia threatened to stage movement after Eid holidays. It is learnt that the policymakers of the government were moved by Khaleda Zias announcement. They held meetings with high-ups of law enforcement agencies on several occasions. In order to revive cases, Police HQ sent messages to all DIG Ranges, police commissioners and police supers. Around 700 cases out of total filed over political violence were lodged without specifying name of the accused leaving a scope for implicating anybody. Besides, police officials concerned were directed to submit charge-sheets in the cases field against leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam over its atrocities in the past. Investigations of 82 cases against the Islamist party are reportedly halted. On the other hand, police, RAB and all intelligence departments have taken massive preparations to resist any violence and anarchy in the name of political movement. They reportedly stored huge arms and ammunitions in this regard. Security has been already beefed up in key installations and important establishments. Primary report of police shows that BNP and its allies patronised and even financed Hefazat-e-Islam in committing violence and clash with law enforcement agencies. Police gave an indication that leaders of BNP and its allies are likely to be implicated in Hefazat cases. Several police officials said the top leaders of BNP and Jamaat are going to be implicated in the cases. Even, district, upazila and union parishad level ranks and files of these parties will be made accused in the cases if their involvements are found during investigation. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said if any party hold democratic movement, the government will extend all support to such party. But if any party tries to let loose violence in the name of movement, they will be resisted with iron hand. BNP-Jamaat alliance put the country in peril in last two years in the name of movement. People voted Awami League to power for five years. So, there is no scope for elections before its term is over, he added. Replying to a query, he said police have been directed to expedite investigations into the cases which were filed over violence BNP, Jamaat and Hefazat-e-Islam. IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker said law takes its own course. If anybody damages the countrys properties or commit violence, he/she will not be spared. It should be determined as to whether the political parties really stages movement or not. Our task is to ensure safety of the people. If anybody commits violence after Eid, action will be taken against them as per the CrPC. Sources concerned said BNP and its allies for the last two years demanded release of Jamaat leaders involved with the war crimes and holding of national election under a caretaker government through violent movement. During that time the two political parties clashed with the law enforcement agency, set fire to vehicles and remove rail lines in different places in the country. They also attacked different police stations and looted fire arms after killing police constables. Many cases were filed with concerned thanas in this connection. Police was the plaintiff of most of the cases while most of the accused of the cases are BNP-Jamaat members. Sources said among the cases most are in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Coxs Bazar, Bogra, Chapainawabganj, Serajganj, Comilla, Feni, Laxmipur, Satkhira. The main accused of the cases are BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir, Barrister Moudid Ahmed, Khondker Mosharraf Hossain, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sirkar, MK Anwar, Brig Gen (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Goyeswar Chandra Roy, Abdullah Al Noman, Sadek Hossain Khoka, Air Vice marshal (retd) Altaf Hossian Chowdhury, Maj (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Nadim Mostafa, Joynul Abedin faruk, Abdul Awaal Mintu, Mir Nasir Uddin, Aman Ullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon, Moazzem Hossain Alal, Fazlul Haque Milon, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, Tariqul Islam, Jamaat leader Mokbul Ahmed, Rofiqulm Islam Khan, Hamidur Rahman Azad. Recently the BNP Chairperson announced that BNP will wage a greater movement after Eid-ul-Fitr for ousting government. After the announcement the AL leaders said we will give answer if the BNP tries to destabilize country. After the announcement the policy makers of the government held meetings with the high officials of law enforcement agency. The meeting took some steps to face the movement. As per instruction of the Home Ministry the police headquarters last week sent directives to all DIGs, Police Commissioners and SPs of all district to take initiative to revive all cases relating to BNP-Jamaat. It is learnt that on April 21 last year during a hartal called by BNP-Jamaat a bus driver named Bodor Ali Beg was killed in fire in broad day light. A case was lodged with Khilgaon thana in this connection. About 500 unidentified men and some members of the BNP and Jamaat were shown accused in the case. The investigation of the case has not yet ended. On the same year Russel Mahmud, a bank official was killed in the citys Uttara area. A case was filed with Uttara thana in this regard. The main accused of the case former Chatta Dal leader and member of the BNP executive committee Azizul Bari Helal. Jamaat-Shibir workers also killed Zafar Munshi, a liftman of Agrani Bank in the citys Dilkusa area. Asaduzzaman, security supervisor of Agrani Bank main branch lodged a case with the Motiojheel thana in this connection. Requesting anonymity, a police official of police headquarters said already the police headquarters directed all concerned to active the cases immediately. We have received information that after Eid-ul-Fitr BNP-Jamaat will launch greater movement. He also said the government has taken a decision to include the names of district and upazila level leaders to the inactive cases if the BNP and Jamaat go for violent activities after the Eid. Mir Shahidul Islam, DIG, Rajshahi Range told Kaler Kontho, We are observing the movement of BNP and Jamaat leaders now who are on bail. We submitted charge sheets of most of the cases. Ilias Sharif, Police Super of Noakhali told Kaler Kontho, We have already submitted charge sheets of all cases filed against BNP and Jamaat activists. We are ready to face any violent activities of BNP and Jamaat after Eid.
