Jhut trader ‘tortured to death’ in custody:Daily Sun

A jhut trader died in custody of Mirpur police station in the capital early Sunday due to alleged torture hours after he was arrested on charge of possessing illegal arms. The deceased was identified as jhut trader Mahbubur Rahman Sujon alias Banku Sujon, 35. Sujon was a listed criminal and accused in several cases, including possession of illegal arms, said Imtiyaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of
Mirpur Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Victim’s wife Mamtaz Sultan Luchi alleged that police tortured Sujon to death in custody for extortion. “My husband was a jhut trader in Mirpur-1 area of the capital. On a tip-off, a police team arrested Sujon along with two firearms and 10 rounds of bullets from a house in Hajaribag area on Sunday night, Imtiyaz said. Later, Sujon was handed over to Mirpur police station, he added. Police also quizzed Sujon’s wife at the police station and then released her, the DMP official said. Imtiyaj also said that soon after the arrest, Sujon fell sick as he was suffering from breathing problem. At one stage, police admitted Sujon to a clinic and then rushed him to Suhrarwardi Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead around 3:30am, he said. The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for post-mortem examination. Luchi told newsmen that her husband was a jhut trader in the city’s Shah Ali area. “He (Sujon) had a feud with Jahidur Rahman, sub-inspector of Mirpur police station over extortion,” she said. “Jahidur used to take illegal toll from my husband but about 10 months back, Sujon refused to give him toll. On refusal, he issued threat to Sujon several times,” she added. “We shifted to Hajazribag from Shah Ali area in fear … but with the help of Hajaribag police, Jahidur picked up my husband along with me on Saturday night and then tortured my husband to death.” DMP on Sunday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the death of Sujon in custody. The committee has also been asked to submit report by seven days. Meanwhile, Jahidur Rahman was closed from Mirpur police station and sent to Rajarbag police lines. Jasim Uddin, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Mirpur Division of the DMP confirmed the matter to daily sun.
