Manuscript changed, NCTB ignores objection:Daily Sun

A book titled “Bangladesh and Bishwaporichoy” was introduced in December 2011 for the students of class VI, VII and VIII instead of Social Science. Since 2012 session, it was taught to the students across the country. But writers of the book alleged that a large number of errors were there in the Social Science book while editing. They submitted a written complain to the National Curriculum and
Text Books Board (NCTB) in this regard. Although two and half years have elapsed, the NCTB did not take any initiative to correct the erroneously-published book. Writers alleged that editing parishad deducted three-fourth of the text from the submitted manuscripts. NCTB did not maintain contact with the writers. When detected, NCTB cannot make any correction to the book because the current year book has already been published. As a result, about 1500 students have to read the irrelevant book. Prof Abul Kashem Mia, Chairman, NCTB told Kaler Kontho, “Incidentally some errors have been made in three books. We are trying our best to present error-free books to the students in the next session.” Under the new education policy, NCTB sources said, in 2011 some nine teachers and experts were given responsibility for writing the book titled “Bangladesh and Bishwaporichoy” for classes VI, VII and VIII. According to the decision of textbook formulating committee and education policy, it was informed to the teachers that learning result will be mandatory prior to every lesson of the book so that students can easily understand. A concept will be given how the students will be benefited after the lesson. Books will be formulated on the basis of 105 classes yearly. So the board authority has included trained curriculum experts to the writer’s panel. Prof Momtajuddin Patwary, Prof Dr. Khandker Mokaddem Hossain, Prof Dr AKM Shahnewaj, Prof Dr Abu Mohammad Delwar Hossain, Dr Selina Akhtar, Fahmida Haque, Dr Uttom Kumar Das, Anwarul Haque and Syeda Sangita Imam were the members of the writers and experts’ panel. Writers said after publishing it was found that the printed books were dissimilar. Books were published without shikhon fol. Much historical information was wrongly printed. The books are smaller than its original size. Previously the numbers of pages of social science book for class six were 102. But new book was published on 76-pages. The numbers of pages of other two books also decreased. Prof Momtajuddin Patwary said, “Those three books cannot be acceptable. We wrote book following the new curriculum. Editing parishad cut most of the matter keeping only some matters written by us. We informed NCTB about the matter but they did not take any action.” It is alleged that an influential professor became angry because he was not included in the historical affairs works. He put education ministry under pressure. The ministry gave responsibility to him for editing those books. He constituted a seven-member editing committee with like-minded people. The new editing committee formulated manuscripts without contacting the writers. Equal number of writers has been included in the editing parishad. Prof Dr Muntasir Mamun, Prof Shafiul Alam, Abul Momen, Prof Dr Mahbub Sadik, Prof Dr Morshed Shafiul Hasan, Prof Dr Syed Azizul Haque and Syed Mahfuj Ali were the members of the editing parisahd of three books. Prof Dr Muntasir Mamun told Kaler Kontho, “NCTB gave us responsibility for editing. We had done what we considered to be better. They have provided books to us only one month before, so we increased editing manpower. A 150-page book for the class VI is not acceptable, so we reduced it. After the publishing of the three books, the writers found that the stories of the books were not written by them and it was full of errors. Five writers lodged written complain because their names were pasted in the books. They informed the NCTB Chairman that they will not bear the responsibility for erroneously-published books. The complainants are: Prof Momtajuddin Patwary, Prof Dr Khandaker Mokammel Hossain, Prof Dr AKM Shahnewaj, Prof Dr Abu Md Delwar Hossain and Dr Selina Akhtar. On January 25 in 2012, the writers informed that there is no similarity of the published books with our written manuscripts. Most of the spelling of writers’ name was printed erroneously. The three books could not fulfill our targeted goal. Writers told that according to new education policy, all secondary level books are curriculum-based. The three mentioned books were supposed to happen on curriculum-based. We submitted manuscripts accordingly. But it was changed while editing. Historians are saying that due to wrong information students will learn distorted history. According to them, in the published book along with much wrong information there has been distortion due to summarising the topic. In addition, there has been linguistic error. On the basis of new research, the traditional misconception was amended and wiped off. But still the traditional wrong history is prevailing in the book titled “Bangladesh O Bishwa Parichay. For example, at the book of class VI and at page number 29, Shil Bhadra has been called as the inhabitant of Bikrampur. But many historians opine that he was the inhabitant of Samatat (Comilla- Noakhali region). At the page number 33, it has been mentioned “Bakhtiyar Khilji’s conquest of Bengal. But most of the historians ignored this conception at earlier times. They said Bakhtiyar did not enter Bengal in consideration of the time regarding this incident. After 100 years of his rule, a major part of Bengal was governed by Sen Kings. After resolving this controversy at the book of class IX and X of NCTB it has been mentioned about Bakhtiyar’s victory over Nadia and Lucknowty in 1996. Prof Dr Emran Jahan of History Department of Jahnagirnagar University said, “Bakhtiyar Khilji never got the victory over Bengal rather he achieved the victory over Nadia, a part of Bengal. And he did not cross the river Padma to attack (catch) Lakshman Sen after his victory over Nadia.” The description of the middle era of 20 pages has been completed in the book named ‘Bangladesh Paath’ within four lines, so the subject has been distorted. According to a historian, the first line of the book of class VI mentioned that ‘Man never lives alone,’ This sentence has been written due to hurry. There are so many examples like this. The first page of the book of class VII mentioned about the ‘Kaiborta Bidroho’ in its first chapter. It explained that it is basically a fishermen community. Historians, however, say that it was the revolt of workers, farmers and fishermen community. The first chapter of the book of class VIII explained a history of 28 years. From this chapter student would not be able to understand clearly the chronological incidents. Prof Dr A K M Shahnewaj said, “The manuscript has been made within short time at the request of the education minister and considered it as a national duty. But suddenly some persons got the task of editing of those books. There are many names but many of them are not writers. After publishing the books, it has been observed that the books are written weakly. We informed the matter to the NCTB and education minister immediately as our writers have less relation with the errors.
