BNP lacks chain of command:Daily Sun

BNP leaders and activists now want to see a wise, dedicated and courageous leadership to lead the party into a fresh movement against the government for an early general election under a non-party administration. Party-insiders said BNP leaders dedicated to the last movement are unhappy and upset about the roles of the central leaders. Though BNP and its allies had tried to resist the last gener
al election, they finally had failed to deter the government from getting it through amid tight security and unsparing action against saboteurs on January 5. Now party top leaders are crying for early election under a non-party government and threatening to launch a tougher movement, but really the opposition is ‘failing’ to forge a proper movement. The party can’t wage movement and encourage the party men due to its organisational crisis, particularly lack of the chain of command and shortage of the wise and dedicated leaders. “Now BNP cannot play its strong role in politics and cannot carry out movement to compel the government to leave the office as our party is now pregnant with opportunists, betrayer, corrupt and coward leaders,” a leader of Swechchasebak Dal told daily sun. Party-insiders said the grass roots are now serious upset about the central leadership and cannot rely on the new central leadership for a fresh movement. They bitterly experienced that the workers had poured into streets to resist the last election while the bigwigs went into hiding. In fear of arrest, many central leaders, including acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam, standing committee members, vice-chairmen and joint secretaries, BNP chairperson’s advisers also remained fugitive during the period. BNP top leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul, had sent written statements and video messages like “Afghan militant leader Osama bin Laden” from an undisclosed place that sparked controversy and made activists upset as well. The acting secretary-general had gone hidden to escape arrest several times while he also appeared before the court wearing veil. “Such his role is very much unfortunate. If a leader of the party hides, who will encourage workers in movement,” a party worker said. BNP grass roots leaders are seriously frustrated over the hide-and-seek game of its top leaders and their absence from the movement, sources said. Though BNP leaders are threatening to bounce back with a strong anti-government campaign soon, the party seems to be on back foot as it is unlikely to be able to launch a fresh movement soon. BNP leaders said the party is actually facing organizational crisis when it yet cannot reorganize the central structure and cannot form new committees of the front and associate bodies also. The party is also facing a ‘dedicated and courageous’ leadership crisis to lead new movement. While asked, BNP leader MK Anwar told daily sun, “We have courageous leaders in our party. We are hopeful we will be successful in our movement.” BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman claimed that the party has a ‘courageous’ leadership to lead the new phase of movement. Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said, “There is a little bit lack of a courageous leadership in our party but we are restructuring our party with new leadership to make it the time-befitting.” BNP sources said Mirza Fakhrul has been working as acting secretary-general for about three years. According to party constitution, the council of the party is supposed to be held every three years, but the timeline for the council expired and it still looked uncertain when the next council would be held. “Now our party needs to be reconstituted with fresh, courageous, dedicated, trustworthy and wise leadership ahead of new movement. Otherwise, our party may lose strength and we again may fail in movement to realize our demand,” another BNP leader said. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia wants to reconstitute the central BNP and its different bodies, including Juba Dal, Chhatra Dal, Swehcchasebak Dal and Mahila Dal, dissolving the existing committees for their failure to play due roles in the last movement but she cannot do so due to internal conflict. She is learnt to be in a serious crisis of confidence in her senior colleagues as the party tries to regroup for the next agitation. “She is also looking for new and dedicated leadership to hold the helm of the party to steer the right course into the movement. She is looking for new persons for secretary general, standing committee member, vice-chairman and joint secretary-general,” a leader said.
