BNP leaders divided over movement plan:Daily Sun

BNP leaders have stood divided into two groups over the policy making to launch an anti-government movement to meet their demand for an early general election under a non-party administration. Party-insiders said top leaders took split views on making crucial strategies for the movement to realise their demand for holding the next general election under a non-party government. Earlier, BNP high-
ups announced that they would go on a tougher movement after Eid-ul-Azha. Now many leaders are saying that there is no timeframe for the movement to oust the government. Party sources said one group of leaders wants to wage an intensified movement through enforcing tougher agitations soon and another section wants to apply a ‘wait-and-see’ tactic. The senior leaders are also divided over the matter of holing dialogue with the government. They, however, think that the ruling party is not interested to hold talks. A dialogue will not bring any benefit for BNP as earlier a dialogue failed to reach any understanding. The BNP-led opposition had boycotted the January 5 general election held under a partisan government and tried to resist the polls, but failed. After the 10th parliament elections, the party leaders, including its chairperson Khaleda Zia, repeatedly threatened to forge movement soon after Eid-ul-Fitr. In the wake of the internal problems, the party backtracked on its decision to go on a tougher movement after the Eid festival. After the Eid, senior leaders started telling that the party would begin it shortly after Eid-ul-Azha. When asked, BNP leader MK Anwar told daily sun, “I do not know about this. I didn’t talk with anyone of my party about this.” “Launching movement will depend on the government’s behaviour. I am hopeful about success of our movement,” he added. BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman said, “There is no difference in our opinions. Our party decision is applicable to all. We are agreed about movement strategy.” Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said, “One of our leaders said movement will start after Eid-ul-Azha. It is not our party decision. We can’t set any particular date for movement.” Party sources said a group of senior leaders want not to continue normal movement for popular issues to gain public support and realise the demand. According to their viewpoints, the party should now take a ‘wait-and-see’ strategy till January next and then go for tougher nonstop movement after that month. They think that it will be better for all political parties in the country if the present political crisis over holding a general election is resolved through holding a dialogue with the government. In view of the experience from the last movement, some BNP leaders think that they can’t oust the Awami League-led government through a tougher movement. They further think that the opposition should make people aware of the government’s misdeeds, corruption and repressions, and ensure people’s involvement in the movement. According to their viewpoints, BNP now should emphasize diplomatic relationship particularly with India to put pressure on the government to resolve the crisis. They also think that the ruling party is falling in a crisis gradually due to their internal conflict and losing popularity for their misdeeds and corruption. Police and public administrations will lose their faith in it (the govt) after a few months. “BNP should allow time for Awami League to be rotten,” a BNP leader said. On the other hand, another group of leaders said BNP should launch a tougher anti-government movement as early as possible as they feared that the ruling party would not sit for dialogue and will try to break BNP unity. They further said if BNP don’t start movement now, it would face a critical time. They fear that the party may be split and can not stand against the ruling party’s activities. A BNP leader alleged that some top leaders of the party are maintaining relations with the ruling party secretly so they are not in favour of tougher movement. “Even they can mislead our leader Khaleda Zia through requesting her to participate in the next general election under the party in power, which will be a destruction of the party,” the source added.
