Some 89 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat have been chargesheeted in two cases filed over the killing of a police constable last year in Rajshahi. The accused in both the cases include Mizanur Rahman Minu, BNP joint secretary general and also its Rajshahi city unit president, and Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Rajshahi city mayor and a BNP leader, said Abul Hashem, inspector of court affairs of Ra
jshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP). Nadim Mostafa, president of Rajshahi district unit BNP, Shafiqul Hoque Milon, general secretary of the party's Rajshahi city unit, and Muhammad Jahangir, assistant secretary general of the city unit Jamaat-e-Islami, the key component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, have also been charged in the cases. Investigation officer of the cases Nur Hossain Khondokar, inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police of the RMP, yesterday submitted charge sheets against the leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Rajshahi. Of the cases, one was lodged for killing police constable Siddhartha Chandra Sarkar, 23, and the other under the explosive substances act. On December 26 last year, Siddhartha and eight other policemen sustained splinter injuries after BNP-Jamaat men had allegedly hurled a bomb at a police patrol van in Rajahata of Rajshahi city during a procession ahead of the January 5 general election. Siddhartha succumbed to his injuries at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka that night. About half an hour before the attack, law enforcers detained some 20 BNP-Jamaat activists at Sonadighi intersection, a quarter of a kilometre off Rajahata, following information of possible subversive activities. Advertisement Police believe the blast was in retaliation for the detention. At the time of the incident, the BNP-Jamaat men were returning through a road in front of Loknath High School in Rajahata after joining a procession led by Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul at nearby Malopara. Sub-inspector Saiful Islam filed the two cases with Boalia Police Station, accusing the 90 BNP-Jamaat men. The cases were transferred to DB on January 19. Nur Hossain Khondokar told The Daily Star that 88 people were chargesheeted out of the 90 accused in the cases. The name of a BNP activist was included in the charge sheets later as his involvement was found during the investigation. The names of the two accused were dropped from the cases as they could not be identified properly, he added. Most of the accused are now on bail. Minu, Bulbul and Milon were imprisoned in the cases, but they were granted bail by the High Court on March 4. Nadim Mostafa also got bail on April 30.
