Failing to get dowry or money for drugs, the husband is torturing wife severely, setting fire to her body or killing her brutally. In conjugal feuds also wife is being killed by husband while husband is being murdered by wife. Wife and daughters are being tortured to death. Parents are involved in incident like child killing in squeal to conjugal feuds or dispute over property. In the recent tim
es such deadly incidents are taking place in the country one after another. The intensity of cruelty is causing widespread concern. Mostly women and children are becoming the victims of cruelty. Crime analysts say, such incidents are increasing due to slack in family and social ties. Violence is being fuelled by social and economic unrest, decay of ethics and values, delay in legal process for settlement of disputes, and slow down in trial process. To control such crimes social and family values have to be strengthened along with stern steps. Family edict also has to be established. Analysis of recent incidents shows that conjugal and family disputes rapidly turn towards violence. The scenario of torture is also more gruesome than that of the past. Incidents of torching women and children are taking place even in social disputes. Attempts were made to kill the whole family by setting fire to the house of college teacher Khalilur Rahman of Kolaroa in Satkhira on October 8. Receiving burn injuries Khalilur Rahmans wife Jharna Begum has already died. Khalil is still under treatment along with two minor sons. Police suspect that this brutal incident took place in a sequel to social and political feuds. In the same night attempt was made to kill a pregnant housewife named Champa Begum at Mirpur in Kustia. She died Wednesday night. The uncle of her husband allegedly committed this crime over land dispute. In Narsingdi, a husband tried to burn her wife Saleha Akter failing to get dowry money. This housewife is under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with serious burn injury. In the latest incident mother of two children Laboni Akter chopped her husband to death with sharp weapon at their own residence in Kalyanpur of Dhaka. Laboni has given primary confession that she has killed her husband Salahuddin out of anger as he married for the second time. After this gruesome murder Laboni kept the body inside wardrobe at the house for one day and surrendered to the police providing the information to them by herself. Meanwhile, in Raujan of Chittagong wife Shahnaz Begum, 32, had kept the body under ground after killing her husband. In the night of last Eid, at one stage of quarrel she killed her taxi driver husband Dudu Miah, 38, and kept his body hidden beside the house and continued cooking food there. Police arrested Shahnaz in connection with the murder of her husband. She admitted to have killed her husband. Later, her husbands body was exhumed. The couple have two children. The killing of the man is a sequel to his alleged extramarital relationship. The criminology experts think drug addiction and extramarital relations have contributed to the rise of domestic and social violence. The other factors like dowry, social and economic discrimination, impact of satellite and internet and unsound trend of social change are also responsible. Omar Faruk, Associate Professor, Criminology and Police Science of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, said the above mentioned crimes are being committed as a result of social degradation. As the society is going through an imbalanced progress, family discipline and moral values are suffering a setback. He said the mistrust between husband and wife are resulting in domestic violence and disintegration. The domestic violence has become widespread recently. The experts said application of law and punitive action are not enough to solve the problem. Rather, initiative should be taken to arbitrate and mitigate domestic and social feuds. The incidents are indicating social unrest. On October 6 this year, a mother and three daughters were burnt to death for refusing a marriage proposal at Mirzapur in Tangail. The victims were identified as Hasna Begum and her three daughtersMonira Akter, Mim Akter and Molly Akter. Besides, stepmother allegedly killed 6-year old daughter Maimuna Akter in Jatrabari on Friday. After being arrested, Sumaiya Islam Sarmin submitted confessional statement to the court. She strangulated the daughter to death. A recent report of UNICEF showed the incident of domestic violence against wives is the highest in Bangladesh compared to other South Asian countries. It said 47 percent wives are being persecuted by husbands in Bangladesh and 34 percent in India. However, African state Guinea has topped the global index for persecution on women. A number of 73 percent women are subjected to torture by their husbands there. Referring to brutality and social crime, Dr Zia Rahman, Chairman of Criminology Department of Dhaka University said, The society is going through a changing situation. When society will be modernized then social as well as family feuds will increase alarmingly. Everybody of the society cannot adjust themselves with the pace of changing society. Social crime and brutality have been rising due to vast expansion of bad devices of modernization. Integrated efforts are needed to eliminate the ongoing unrest from entire society. Crime experts said that woman and children are the main victims of family chaos. In many times, women of the society angrily involve themselves in violent activities being tortured for long time. Social unrest and violence will reduce if the incidents of children and woman repression diminish, experts opined. Analysing cases, the Police Headquarters said that the incidents of woman and children repression are on the rise.
