Cabinet reshuffle in the offing?:Daily Sun

  The cabinet may be reshuffled soon to make the administration more active to run the country. According to sources, this has become necessary following the removal of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Abdul Latif Siddique from the cabinet and to induct some new faces into it besides redistribution of some portfolios. In view of the unwarranted performance of Latif Siddi
que and its aftermath there is strong demand from the party leaders and activists to remove other controversial ministers also from the cabinet. The present cabinet was formed after the January 5 elections to the Jatiya Sangsad. On January 12 last, 29 ministers,18 state ministers and 2 deputy minister took oath. Taking into consideration the performance of the cabinet over the last nine months the Prime Minister is believed to have decided to recast the cabinet soon. The reshuffle may take place after the prime minister’s return from Italy visit. According to sources, in the likely cabinet reshuffle, a few ministers who are controversial and inefficient, may be dropped while some new faces may be inducted. Besides, there may be some inter-changes of portfolios. It is gathered that the prime minister is not satisfied with the performance of some of the ministers and state ministers and she may drop them from the cabinet. In view of the deterioration of the law and order situation and continued increase in the volume of works in the home ministry, a full-fledged home minister may be inducted into the cabinet during the likely reshuffle. The sources further indicated that more than one senior AL leaders and a few junior ones may be inducted into the cabinet in the possible reshuffle. Meanwhile, ahead of the likely reshuffle of the cabinet, aspirant Aweami League leaders, both new and old, are learnt to have been lobbying extensively to get berths in the cabinet. Among them are those leaders also who were there in the last AL cabinet, but are excluded from the present one. According to sources, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim may be made the health minister again while Sahara Khatun may be taken back in the cabinet. Besides, former foreign minister Dipu Moni and former Environment minister Dr. Hasdan Mahmud and former food minister Dr. Abdur Razzaque may also get cabinet berths again. Party insiders say that the premier may appoint a full minister at home ministry. The ministry has been running at present by a state minister while the premier is in-charge of the ministry. Incumbent Health Minister Mohammad Nasim may be given the charge of the home ministry as he served as the home minister during the Awami League’s 1996 government. The premier may induct a full minister in the Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Ministry as the Latif Siddique holding this ministry has been removed from the cabinet .
