Decision to drop Latif Siddique final:Daily Sun

It has been finally decided to remove Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Latif Siddique from the cabinet. Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has taken this decision against him for making comments hurting the Islamic religious values. The decision will be executed after the Prime Minister’s return to the country tomorrow (Thursday). After her
return, the cabinet division will publish the circular in this regard. Two senior ministers said Sheikh Hasina firmly believes in Islamic values and performance of religious rituals. She herself performed the holy hajj seven times. She also offers namaz fives times a day regularly. She performs fasting and other religious rituals. Not only Islam, she does not tolerate derogatory remarks or attitude towards any religion. The audacious remark of Latif Siddique has also aggrieved the Prime Minister along with other religious minded Muslims. So, she does not want to accept this responsibility keeping him in the cabinet. A minister said at the time of finalising the 15th amendment to the constitution, the then planning minister AK Khandker had told Sheikh Hasina that he would resign from the cabinet if Bismillah was not dropped from the constitution. In reply, Sheikh Hasina told him “I shall not omit Bismillah from the constitution. If you want, you may quit.” Sources said the derogatory remarks of Latif Siddique on the great Prophet (PBUH), holy hajj and Tabligi Jamaat have hurt the religious sentiment and sparked widespread reaction among religious minded Muslim society including Alem and Olema. And so, the report of quick decision by Sheikh Hasina to drop him from the cabinet has reassured the religious minded people. Meanwhile, several top ranking leaders of Awami League have confirmed that Latif Siddique will be relieved of his party responsibility also. This will be done for making comments against Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wazed Joy. This has to be done to maintain discipline in the party. Awami League policymakers further said Latif Siddique has committed two offences. One is making derogatory comments on religious values and another is making aspersion on the future leader of the party. This is tantamount to violation of party discipline. They said he who spoke against Joy today, will speak against Sheikh Hasina tomorrow. Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta said there is no scope to backtrack from the decision to remove Latif Siddique. After Awami League’s return to the power for the second time, Abdul Latif Siddique was sworn in as Minister for Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology. Before that he was minister for jute and textile. There are a lot of allegations against him by party leaders, workers and government officials. Leaders and workers do not go to him for his non-political attitude. He is also criticised in his area, but nobody dares to open mouth. There is allegation in the area that Abdul Latif Siddique beat up Alauddin Siddique College librarian Mukter Ali last year. As he fell unconscious, then he was rushed to the hospital. When the Principal of the college Brojo Gopal Shaha went to the minister’s chamber to meet him about one and half years ago, he was profusely rebuked. The Principal committed suicide after some days. In September 2012, the minister rebuked Kalihati upazila family planning officer Moniruzzaman and upazila Juba Unnayon Officer Shahjahan Reza at the monthly law and order meeting and handed over them to police. After being elected MP in 1996, Latif Siddique beat up upazila unnayon officer Abul Kalam Azad who was forced to escape by jumping into a nearby pond. After becoming minister for the first time, he was present at the first meeting of upazila. He found there the fisheries officer Abdul Kuddus wearing coat and tie. Rebuking him, Latif Siddique said “Being a fisherman you have worn coat and tie?” On March 28 last year, PDB sub-assistant engineer Purno Chandra Pal was physically assaulted by Latif Siddique.
