Mohammad Sohel, an officer of a private company was struggling at the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with several wounds in his whole body as he was the victim of a mugging incident that took place at Paltan area in the city on Sunday night. The muggers caught him and took in a microbus and moved to various places and realised Tk 3000 using his credit card from ATM booth. Fi
nally the muggers left him on a street after using acrimonious ointment on his eyes. The pedestrians rescued him and sent to the hospital. Just after one day (Tuesday) of this incident, passengers of a microbus tried to snatch the hand bag of a housewife named Ayesha Akhter Ripa at city’s Sobhanbag area who was going by a rickshaw. She was dragged away several feet on the street. And Ripa was seriously injured in this incident and later she died in the hospital. Such types of incidents are frequently taking place in the capital and city residents are being the victims. Police and RAB are also failing to tackle such uncommon incidents in the city. According to sufferers, the miscreants are being desperate for lack of effective monitoring system, necessary action against mugging incidents and effective punitive measures. Police officials said the security system of the city has been strengthened. Monitoring as well as check-posts has been increased in the city. Different activities are going on in controlling mugging incidents. But in fact, the success of such initiatives is not visible. The victims of the mugging incidents face many obstacles to get the assistance of police. Most of the mugging incidents are not recorded with the police stations. On the other hand, incidents which are considered as general diaries do not bring any solution. Joint commissioner of police Monirul Islam told this correspondent that except the mugging incidents other crimes incidents are declining in the city. But it is not being possible to control the muggers. The number of police monitoring has been increased so that any incident like Ripa does not take place. He said the victims of mugging incident do not come to police and thus there is no action. But police often are arresting the muggers. Commandar Mufti Mahmud Khan of legal and media wing of RAB said RAB are playing special role in tackling any kind of incidents as several RAB teams are engaged in monitoring in different police station areas. As per the monthly statement of police it has been learnt that 19 incidents in last January, 20 in February, 26 in March, 21 in April, 22 in May, 15 in June, 25 in July, 28 in August and 29 incidents took place in September. Allegations have it that the law enforcing members are not emphasising on the mugging incidents. They enhance monitoring for some days when incidents like killing take place. The strategy of muggers has been changed as they are now engaged with microbus or private cars. People are being forced to go with mugger’s vehicles and all belongings are forcibly taken and finally innocent people are being thrown away from the running vehicles. At dawn and midnight, the muggers are snatching bags from the running rickshaw passengers. Cutting covers of CNG-run auto rickshaw they are snatching passenger’s bags or belongings. Most of the incidents are taking place in densely populated areas in broad day light. According to police there are around four hundred mugging spots in the capital. Although those spots were identified but due to shortage of personal it is not possible to always patrol those areas, said police officials. Some times mugging takes place when duty shift is changed. Muggers remain active around the intersecting points of police stations, claimed the officials. They commit the crime one area under one police station and takes runs away in another area under another police station. Police of one station are usually not quite active to capture criminals in another police station. Victims informed about many incidents like this. Mugging takes place in Bangla Motor, Damra, Magbazar, Motijheel, Paltan, Dhanmondi, Shyampur, Dholaikhal, Sadarghat, Mahakhali, Panthapath, Green Road, Khamarbari, Farmgate, front road of Chandrima Uddan, Shawrapara, Agargaon, Mohammadpur Beribadh, Kalshi of Mirpur, Beribadh, Rupnagar, Kafrul, Mirpur Ansar Camp, Banani Kakoli intersection, Banasree, Rampura bridge, in front of Notre Dame College, Khilgon, Bishaw Road, in front of Gabtoli bus terminal, Sobhanbag, Indira Road, areas around Doyel Chattar in Dhaka University, Hatirjheel, Tejgaon Satrasta, main road around Bangabandhu International Conference Center at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, in front of Mirpur Sony Cinema Hall, Paribagh, Aurangzeb Road in Mohammadpur and Katasur, said the locals. Recently a good number of mugging incidents took place in Karwan Bazar area. Some people are being mugged while they are stuck in the traffic signal. Muggers quickly mix among the passersby after crossing the road. Security in that area has become very fragile. Lives are being lost due to extreme aggressiveness of muggers. Muggers took away Tk 10 thousand after hacking a businessman in the Old Dhaka on October 17. Muggers attacked Alamgir Hossain with knife and took away Tk 70 thousand on October 21. A shop keeper was killed after receiving bullet by muggers. It was found that most of the victims did not go to the police station to file any case.
