Bilateral business council to be formed with EU: Tofail:Daily Sun

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed Tuesday said a council styled “European Union Business Council” will be formed comprising ambassadors of the EU states in Bangladesh and business leaders of the concerned trade bodies aimed at boosting export and bi-lateral ties with the EU nations. “The hurdles to enhancing trade between Bangladesh and EU states will be removed through this initiative,” Tofail said
. The commerce minister was addressing a press conference after a meeting with newly appointed ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon at the commerce ministry. Criticising the activities of local think tank Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Tofail alleged “They have got some vested objectives behind their research. The CPD is circulating negative impression about the country at a time when all the countries from across the globe are expressing positive gesture about the advancement of Bangladesh’s economy.” He also raised a question before the Journalists if CPD research is more authentic than that of the World Bank? Rejecting a report of the CPD, released on last November 27, the minister said “As the citizens of Bangladesh, we all should highlight the economic development of the country abroad and when we are doing the same, some organisations are projecting negative things.” Regarding the meeting with the EU Ambassador, Tofail said the EU envoy had expressed interest to import pharmaceutical, ship and ICT products along with RMG items from Bangladesh. Terming the EU as trusted friend of Bangladesh, he said Bangladesh makes more than 50 percent of its total $30.19-billion export to EU countries. He also expressed hope that export to the EU nations will increase further in the days to come. “As per the WTO decision, the EU countries are also giving duty-free-quota-free (DFQF) access to Bangladeshi products,” said the minister. Tofail also expressed hoped that under the able leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s export will reach $40-50 billion within the next 5 years while the country will turn into a middle-income one within the year 2021 and a developed country within 2041. Additional Commerce Secretaries ATM Murtaza Reza Chowdhury, Amitava Chakravarty, Md Shawkat Ali Waresi, and Manoj Kumar Roy were present on the occasion.
