Security beefed up across country:Daily Sun

Security has been tightened across the country, especially in the capital, ahead of the verdict on an appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee against his death penalty for war crimes is set to be delivered today. Law enforcers have been deployed in different parts of the capital while Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) authorities on Tuesday evening set up check points at sev
eral points in the city to prevent any unlawful activities by the Jamaat-Shibir activists. The move came hours after the Supreme Court announced that it will deliver its verdict tomorrow (Wednesday) on an appeal filed by Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee, challenging the death penalty awarded to him in a war crimes case. The SC and its adjoining areas have already been put in a security blanket with the deployment of additional forces of police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and other law enforcement agencies. HC sources said closed circuit television cameras were also installed on the SC premises. DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed has sent directives to all police stations in the capital in this regard asking the police force to take all-out security measures. Police are searching the bags of city commuters setting at least 56 check points. Meanwhile, security has also been tightened at the Kashimpur Jail ahead of the verdict on the appeal. Amzad Hossian, Jailer of Kashimpur central jail part 1, confirmed the matter. Jail sources said security has been tightened in Kashimpur jail area as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) enlisted the appeal of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee in a war crime case on Wednesday’s cause list. A police official of Gazipur special branch said they have enough preparation to avoid any sort of destructive activities. But it was not confirmed yet whether the accused would be sent to Dhaka from Kashimpur, he added. Huge numbers of police and RAB members were deployed at various points of Gazipur after the Supreme Court announced that it will deliver its verdict today (Wednesday). The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) enlisted the appeal on the Wednesday’s cause list filed by Jamaat leader Sayedee, challenging death penalty given to him in a case filed against him on charges of crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971. A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain will hear the appeal. Earlier on February 28 last year, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for killing Ibrahim Kutti and one Bisa Bali in Pirojpur district during the Liberation War in 1971. Immediately after announcement of the verdict, Jamaat-Shibir activists and their clique carried out destructive activities across the court, including killings of many innocent people, torching vehicles, damaging property and cutting down hundreds of trees demanding cancellation of the verdict.
