PMO unhappy with power sector:Daily Sun

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is unhappy as most of the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina aiming to develop the country’s power sector through its reforms remained unimplemented. The prime minister gave eighteen directives on power sector reform during her visit to the ministry concerned on February 6, 2014. The PMO is expected to hold a review meeting with its secretary Abul Kalam Azad
in the chair on December 22. Of the directives, the premier asked the authorities to make Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) into a corporation like the state-owned Petrobangla. But it would take time, BPDB officials said. She also asked to take necessary steps to activate the South Zone Power Distribution Company and North Zone Power Distribution Company. The Power Division is yet to make any progress in this regard, officials said. The premier also advised the power division to form a Central Zone Power Distribution Company, which is yet to see light, they said. Series of private and public power projects are yet to get Petrobangla assurance to generate electricity as per the premier’s directive. But the Petrobangla has already confirmed the gas supply to the renewal rental power projects. As per the decision of the premier during her February visit, Sheikh Hasina asked to corporatise the Ghorasal Power hub but there is hardly any progress in this regard, insiders said. Sheikh Hasina asked to form separate company to make sure operation and maintain the public and private power projects but there is also hardly any progress in this regard. The Power Division, however, made tremendous progress in appointing officials in publicity wing, engineering and inspection and also governance and legal wing. In publicity wing, it is alleged that incapable officials who have no experience in media got appointed. Besides, it also made progress in setting up solar-based easy bike recharged units as per the premier directive. But experts from BUET already advised the power division not to encourage the bike as it has faulty in design that is responsible for road mishaps. The Power Division also received positive response to import another 100MW of electricity from Agargaon. “We are working to implement the premier directive in Power Sector,” state minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid told daily sun yesterday.
