Some 27 out of the country’s 53 diplomatic missions have failed to achieve the export target for the July-November period of the current fiscal. Latest data from Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) suggest that 26 missions among 53 Bangladeshi missions abroad could achieve their export targets for the first five months of the current 2014-15 FY. The scenario was almost same in the July-October period a
s 32 missions missed the export target. The exporters have been demanding arranging more trade fairs aboard to promote Bangladeshi products to the foreign buyers. They also suggested for appointing efficient officials in the commercial wings of the Bangladeshi missions abroad to better promote Bangladeshi products. EPB data show that 26 diplomatic missions were given a target of fostering export worth $1743.43 million during the July-November period of the current FY year, but they fetched $1916.39 million, surpassing the target by 9.91 percent. The foreign missions those achieved the target include the same in Stockholm, Tokyo, New Delhi, Mexico City, Islamabad, Tehran, Athens, Manila and Yangon. Meanwhile, failure of 27 missions had led to the fetching of exports worth $9863.63 million against the target of $11002.41 million. The missions that failed to meet the export target include the offices in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Hanoi, Rome, Brussels, Beijing, Beirut, Geneva, Moscow and Kuala Lumpur. “To promote Bangladeshi products abroad, there is no alternative to holding international fairs frequently” said Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of Exporters Association of Bangladesh. He also stressed on product diversification to expand the market reach of Bangladeshi products.
