Ruling Awami League has taken a plan to remain on the streets on January 5 as part of observance of its pre-announced programmes on the Day of Victory for Democracy. AL high command has directed party leaders and activists to control the streets in a happy mood for whole the day (from dawn to dusk) on January 5. The party also asked its activists to take decision on their own judgment to face sit
uations if BNP-Jamaat tries to create chaos and violence on the day. Pointing at BNP, a number of top leaders of the ruling party said they will not give any scope to opposition for creating anarchy and asked BNP not to engage in violence. Awami League has all preparations to resist BNP if the party tries to create violence on the Day of Victory for Democracy, AL leaders warned. In the meantime, Awami League has decided to hold rallies at 16 points of the capital and elsewhere across the country on January 5 to observe the Day of Victory for Democracy. The 16 points of the capital where AL will hold rallies are Purobi Cinema Hall at Mirpur, Shyampur-Jurain Rail Gate, Demra-Jatrabari Ground, Badda-Rampura Petrol Pump, Dhanmondi-32, Mirpur-1 Intersection, Lalbagh, Gulshan, Sutrapur, Tejgaon, Sabujbagh-Khilgaon, Uttara, Kamrangirchhar, Mohammadpur, Kafrul and Suhrawardy Udyan. AL leaders, including Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Motia Chowdhury, Mohammad Nasim, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Jafarullah, Obaidul Qauder and Sahara Khatun, will participate in the rallies at Dhaka. Apart from these, the party will bring out joyous rallies and processions in all the municipalities, district and upazila headquarters at 2:30pm on the day. A top leader of Dhaka city unit AL told daily sun that party’s high command has directed them to remain on the streets, accompanied by party activists, of their respective areas from dawn to dusk on January 5 to celebrate the day of victory for democracy. Top leaders of the ruling party, addressing various events on Saturday, also warned BNP not to engage in violent activities on January 5. Addressing an event, Commerce Minister and AL senior leader Tofail Ahmed said law will take its own course if anyone tries to violate law and order. “Normalcy will continue on the day (January 5) if anybody doesn’t violate law and order. But, law will take its own course if anyone tries to disturb law and order,” he said while addressing a meet the press programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Saturday. Tofail expressed doubt about BNP’s capacity for waging movement and suggested the party work for getting public support. “You should shun placing proposal but should take preparations for next polls,” he said pointing at seven-point proposal of BNP. The leader also said there is no possibility of holding dialogue and mid-term election at this moment. AL publicity and publication secretary Hasan Mahmud called upon party activists to resist BNP if the party tries to create chaos on January 5. “We have to resist those who will try to create chaos on the day [January 5]. They [BNP] have lost organisational strength but are still hatching conspiracies,” he said while addressing a discussion arranged by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the city on Saturday. Former minister Hasan said Awami League (AL) will observe January 5 as the day of victory for democracy but BNP had announced programme on the day only because they want to create chaotic situation. “But, countrymen will not allow them to create anarchy,” he said. Food minister Quamrul Islam on Saturday called upon Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and activists not to try to come to the streets on January 5. “Please, don’t try to come to the streets on January 5. Don’t try to create violent situation. BNP has to take responsibility if any violence takes place on January 5,” he said pointing at BNP. The minister came up with the remarks while addressing an extended meeting of 14-party alliance’s Dhaka city leaders at AL’s Bangabandhu Avenue office in the city. Dhaka city unit AL leader Quamrul said AL activists will control the streets on January 5. Addressing the same meeting, Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said none of the 7-point of Khaleda Zia will work as city dwellers will take position at 16-points of Dhaka on January 5. Maya also urged Khaleda Zia to be corrected for the sake of protecting her existence. Days before, Quamrul Islam asked party activists to take decision on their own judgment on January 5 if BNP-Jamaat tries to create anarchy.
