After a jewellery shop employee ran to a police patrol team for protection from attackers, one of the law enforcers there robbed him off 23 bars of gold at Old Railway Station in Chittagong on Thursday. Police yesterday recovered the gold bars from the possession of arrested Sub-Inspector Abul Hossain of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police. They also arrested Tarek Haider, 32, Bappi Ahmed, 29, Ala
mgir Hossain, 24, Md Kabir, 28, and Jasim Uddin, 29. All of them were hawkers at the train station and the police believe they took part in the mugging. Police said they were looking for another suspect Abdur Rahim, 34. The six hawkers locked in an altercation with Sajal Chowdhury, manager of a jewellery shop, near the Old Railway Station on Thursday afternoon. Sajal was on his way to Dhaka with the gold bars, said Officer-in-Charge Mohiuddin Selim of Kotwali Police Station yesterday. Sajal rushed to the police team on patrol and sought help but SI Abul Hossain took Sajal and his alleged attackers to a nearby hotel and at one stage took the gold bars from Sajal, the OC said. He said Sajal was the manager of a jewellery shop owned by one Narayn Karmakar on Hazari Lane. Advertisement CMP Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal said they had so far recovered 23 gold bars from the procession of Abul Hossain. He said he had heard that 28 gold bars were snatched from the two jewellers. He could not give details about when and where the bars were recovered.
