Jatiya Party will secure victory in the next parli
amentary election by acquiring 151 parliamentary seats,” Ershad said while addressing a grand rally in the capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan, marking the party’s 29th founding anniversary. He also placed 18-point demand and the party’s course of action to acquire power. Some of the points are—introducing provincial government, revising the election procedure, giving full freedom to the Election Commission, restoring Upazila Court and keeping the administration and judicial system free from partisan influences. HM Ershad, also the special envoy to the Prime Minister, also said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is facing the consequences of what she did in the past. Pointing finger to Khaleda, Ershad said: “History doesn’t forgive anyone. The judgement of history is so cruel. You once sent me to jail, imprisoned my son and wife but I could see them every week. But Allah knows when you will see your sons.” HM Ershad claimed that his government had built the foundation of economic development, on which Bangladesh is moving forward now. He also claimed that initiatives taken by the then JP government made it possible for the incumbent government to achieve self-sufficiency in food production. Ershad said, “I started the developmental work in the country. I had formed the LGED so that all the muddy-roads can be carpeted.” He said the foundation stone of Bangabandhu Bridge on the River Jamuna was laid by him. The JP Chairman said his government had initiated projects to build seven flyovers in the capital, but the BNP regime suspended the projects after assuming power. “Traffic congestion would have been eliminated from the capital if those flyover projects had not been scrapped,” said the former dictator. He also criticised the current government and threatened to wage a tough movement if the government increases power and gas tariffs. “We heard that the government is planning to increase the prices of power and gas from January. But, we ask the government not to do it. It will cause sufferings to the poor people,” said Ershad. The government can bring back the Tk 14,000 crore that had been siphoned off from country and use the fund as energy subsidy, said Ershad. Several thousands leaders and activists of the party from the city, its adjoining areas and different districts attended the rally. JP leaders and activists—carrying posters, placards and banners throng the rally, ignoring the daylong hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami. JP Secretary General Ziauddin Bablu presided over the rally where JP chairman HM Ersahd addressed the party men as the chief guest. Leader of the opposition Raushan Ershad, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, secretary general of the party Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu addressed the rally, among others. JP presidium member GM Quader, Kazi Feroz Rashid, Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Saidur Rahman, Salma Islam and other leaders also attended the rally.
