The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday warned the intending candidates of Dhaka City Corporations (DCCs) about their advance election campaign before announcement of the poll schedule. EC Commissioner Mohammad Shahnewaz said this while talking to newsmen at the EC Secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Sunday. He said they are planning to take cognizance of expenditure that candidate
s are spending before poll schedule. The EC has nothing to do before poll schedule but advance campaign expenditure of the candidates will be added to the election expenditure if they applied for city election candidature after announcement of poll schedule, he said. The commissioner said, “There is a limit of election expenditure of each candidate. The commission will take action if anyone crosses the expenditure limit. We will discuss it to the next meeting.” The intending candidates of Dhaka City Corporations have already started campaign through television advertisement, billboard, poster and field visit in their respective areas. The election commissioner also said the commission has almost completed preparatory work for the elections to both the city corporations in Dhaka. Earlier in parliament, it was decided that poll candidates have to submit 12 digit e-TIN (tax identification number) for participating in the election. In order to add the new amendment to the nomination form, the commission brought the changes and sent it to the law ministry on Sunday to have statutory regulatory order (SRO) number on it. “On receiving the draft rules with SRO number, the Election Commission will start publishing new nomination forms and declare the polls schedule,” the commissioner said, adding that the next commission meeting is likely to be held on Thursday or Sunday.
