Bangladesh to join 2nd submarine cable by ’16:Daily Sun

Bangladesh is set to be connected with the second submarine cable by 2016 in a move to ensure uninterrupted international telecommunication in case of any outage in the existing link. Establishing a link with the new SEA-ME-WE-5 submarine cable at Kuakata, Patuakhali point will cost the government Tk 660 crore. Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL) will implement the new project during th
e July, 2014 to June 2016 period.  The 20,000kms proposed submarine cable will stretch from Singapore to France via the Indian subcontinent and middle-east. The project entitled: ‘Regional Submarine Telecommunication Project, Bangladesh’ is being tabled today at the scheduled meeting of the Ecnec for approval, sources in the Planning Commission said. With the new link, the country will achieve ownership of 1,300Gbps bandwidth, paving way for more expanded internet connectivity facilitating the outsourcing and freelancing coupled with software exports.  It is also expected to meet increased demand for bandwidth resulted from introduction of 3G mobile service and planned launching of 4G/LTE telephony in near future. Bangladesh in now connected to SEA-ME-WE-4 cable connection which helped it a lot in bringing about revolutionary changes to the country’s telecommunications sector. But fixing any sudden cut or troubles involved with it consumes around 7 to 10 days, severely disrupting international telecommunication, also prompting authorities to think about an alternative connection, official sources said. Out of the Tk 660.64 crore project cost, the government will provide Tk 166 crore, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Tk 352 crore and BSCCL will bear Tk 142.64 crore of the project cost. Post, telecommunication and ICT ministry gave the go-ahead to BSCCL after it got an invitation from SEA-ME-WE consortium to be involved with the new project. In this regard, BSCCL inked a construction & maintenance agreement (C&MA) with the consortium in March 2014, which was later ratified by the concerned Cabinet committee. The project fund will be spent on acquiring and developing land for landing station, its construction and purchasing necessary equipment and cable, according to the project document.
