BNP had evil design over city polls: PM:Daily Sun

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday alleged that BNP had an evil design to kill some people centering the recently held elections to the three city corporations. “They (BNP) wanted to boycott the city polls after killing some people. But it had not been possible as people and law enforcement agencies were on high alert, she said.” Sheikh Hasina said this while exchanging greetings with a dele
gation of Buddhist leaders on the occasion of Buddha Purnima at her official residence Ganabhaban in the capital. The BNP boycotted the elections to three city corporations— Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chittagong — by bringing allegations of capturing polling centres and massive vote rigging. “BNP activists were not on the street during their movement. The same thing happened during the city polls. They suddenly boycotted the polls after a couple of hours. They did set polling agents,” she said. Mentioning BNP-Jamaat’s mayhem during their 92-day countrywide blockade, the premier said that they had killed people through arson in the name of movement. Sheikh Hasina also alleged that the BNP-Jamaat alliance does not want betterment of the country and its people, saying that their politics is for destruction. “When Bangladesh is being recognised as a role model of development in the the world, BNP-Jamaat nexus began politics of destruction and started burning people to death,” she said  “Such politics never brings welfare for the people,” she said. Referring to the BNP-Jamaat mayhem, Sheikh Hasina said they had killed innocent people such as bus drivers, helpers, students through hurling fire bombs. She recalled that even women and children were not spared from the arson attacks. “Stern action will be taken against those involved in the BNP-Jamaat’s brutal activities,” she said.  The premier said people irrespective of cast and creed and religion now celebrate various festivals together in peace and harmony in the country. ‘Religion is for individual and festival is for all’, she mentioned.  Religious affairs minister Principal Motiur Rahman, state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, CHT Bouddha Bhikhu Sangha President Proggyananda Mahathero and Bangladesh Bouddha Krishti Prachar Sangha Chairman Shuddhananda Mahathero also spoke on the occasion.
