US seeks long-term solution:Daily Sun

The United States is disappointed with the elections to Dhaka and Chittagong City Corporations and wants a probe into the allegations of irregularities in the polls and procedural improvement in the future elections. Stating this at a press conference in Dhaka on Friday US State Department Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman said her country wants a long term solution to the politi
cal crisis in Bangladesh. On the same day,  UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the city election issue. According to sources, the Prime Minister told Ban Ki-moon that the elections were fair. The UN Secretary General described as unfortunate the BNP’s participation in the polls first and then pull out in the midway and expressed concern over this. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali said at a function in Dhaka on Saturday that the government is not worried over the US disappointment and Ban Ki-moon’s telephone. He said it is a great success that there was no casualty in the elections. What Ban Ki-moon and Wendy Sherman said on Friday about the city elections, are almost similar to the views expressed in their reaction to the polls on Tuesday by the UN and different friendly western countries including the USA. In the opinion of the western countries, these elections were a ‘game changer’ amid the BNP’s three months long movement, political unrest, indiscriminate violence and subversion. They had called for making the elections fair and transparent with the hope that the elections might bring a positive change in the country’s politics. The western sources said they are continuing their calls and expectations so that fresh political uncertainty is not created by the elections which became ‘controversial’ due to the allegations of irregularities and announcement of boycott by the BNP.  On Thursday night at a meeting of the lower house of the US Congress, the Bangladesh issue came up for consideration when the members described the situation as undisciplined and discussed their responsibilities and possible course of action. Earlier, on Thursday during their meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Gonobhaban Wendy Sherman and Nisha Desai Biswal, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, raised the election issue and emphasised the need for fair elections in future. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday expressed the hope that the UN Secretary General will advise the BNP to return to democratic politics shunning the path of violence. In her telephonic conversation with Ban Ki-moon, the Prime Minister said the pull-out of BNP from the polls in the midway was aimed at making the election questionable. The elections were fair and not a single casualty took place, she added.    On the other hand, when Wendy Sherman called on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday, she (Khaleda) alleged that the city elections were rigged. Besides, the BNP leader spoke about country’s political situation, election rigging, repression by the government and implicating opposition leaders in false cases.
