Follow ideals of Tagore: PM:Daily Sun

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday urged the countrymen to follow the ideals of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore as the poet always took the path of peace instead of violence. “He always spoke for peace instead of destructive activities,” Hasina said while addressing a programme at Shahjadpur Model Pilot High School ground in Sirajganj. Highlighting Tagore’s activities, the premier said
, “The poet refused to take the Knight Title, given by the British, in protest against the killing of Jallianwala Bagh.” The premier also laid the foundation stone of Rabindra University of Bangladesh, marking the 154th birth anniversary of the poet. Referring to the recent mayhem carried out by BNP-Jamaat, the premier posed questions why our consciences would not develop against such subversive activities. “I do not understand why such feeling would not develop among us against the subversive activities,” she said. The premier also expressed utter surprise over the people’s support to BNP’s politics. “How the voters cast votes in the recently held three city corporation polls for those who had burnt people to death and torched buses and destroyed public and private property in the name of movement?” she questioned. Quoting some verses from Tagore, the premier said a quarter still expects usurping office in an illegal way.  “Those quarter burn people to death in the name of movement. Yet, how a section of people support them and cast votes for them?” she posed a question. Recalling the country’s architect of independence, the premier said Bangabandhu earned the country’s independence while Tagore placed the Bangla language to the international standard.  “Bangabandhu fulfilled Tagore’s desire of freedom of humanity,” she said. Recalling the memorabilia of Tagore at Shahjadpur, the premier said many of Tagore’s works were done here. “We have taken a move to establish the university here to keep his memory alive,” she said, directing the administration to complete the construction work of the university immediately.  Listing her government’s development activities, the premier said her government took a move to set up a Bangladesh Bhaban at Shanti Niketan in West Bengal. The premier also inaugurated the Regional Passport Office, Sirajganj, upgrading of Sirajganj 150MW gas turbine power plant to 250 MW combined cycle one, Institute of Marine Technology, District Registers Office and Sheikh Russell Poura Children’s Park, Sirajganj. Professor emeritus Anisuzzaman read out the key note paper on Tagore while PM’s political adviser HT Imam, education minister Nurul Islam Nahid and health minister Mohammad Nasim, among others, also addressed the programme with cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor in the chair.
