80 former and new AL MPs locked in war of attrition:Daily Sun

Ahad Ali Sarker is former MP of Natore-2 while Shafiqul Islam Shimul is the present MP. Although both are leaders of ruling Awami League (AL) Ahad Ali Sarker is almost exiled from politics in the face of domination of Shimul. Here Shimul is all in all. Whenever there is any tension, the former MP retreats and as a result no clash takes place. But a responsible district AL leader states that relat
ion between the two is not good at all. Again, the situation in Sirajganj-5 constituency is quite the opposite. There present MP Mojid Mondol is totally cornered by former MP Abdul Latif Biswas. The domination of Latif Biswas here is so much that despite getting nomination in January 5 election Mojid Mondol faced obstacles in electioneering from the supporters of Latif Biswas. In the last week of last Ramadan at the extended meeting of district AL Latif Biswas publicly blasted Mojid Mondol saying if BNP launches movement it will be seen who put up resistance here except Latif Biswas. In Mymensingh-10 (Gaffargaon) Gias Uddin Ahmed is former MP and Fahmi Golondaz Babel is the present MP. Mymensingh district AL general secretary Motin Sarker stated that there is extreme discord and feuds between the two. He told Kaler Kantho that this conflict is over establishing supremacy. They do not see each others face. Infighting is so intense that the supporters of one is not secure in the face of those of the other. Stating that the organisation is being affected due to this battle of supremacy, Matin Sarker said “I have tried several times to bring rapprochement between the two, but failed. They can not tolerate each other.” Although such discord and clash exist in all the constituencies of the country, AL central office sources said this feud is bitter between 80 old and new MPs of 20 districts. The main reason of this conflicts is to retain domination in the area. Besides new MP tries to prove the old MP as failure and ensure own candidature in future. On the other hand the old MP wants to get back nomination by showing the present MP as unsuccessful. Due to these reasons even in observing party programmes in the area the old and new MPs take conflicting stands. Investigation shows that new MPs have become powerful in some places while the old ones are showing dominance in other places. Field leaders held this feud as responsible for organisational weakness. However, the central leaders are taking it positively. They think the feud is nothing but a competition between the former and incumbent. AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told Kaler Kantho “Sometimes, we receive information from many districts that one MP is vying with his predecessor and successor. It is nothing but a competition between two leaders.” AL presidium member Kazi Zafarullah subscribed to the view of Mahbubul Hanif. But, Jhenaidah AL general secretary Advocate Azizur Rahman gave a different interpretation of the infighting. He said incumbent MP of Jhenaidah-4 constituency Anwarul Azim Anar and his predecessor Abdul Mannan have resorted to feud. They do not attend the organisational activities. They run two parallel groups. Sometimes, the two groups are locked in clash. Jhenaidah-3 former lawmaker Shafikul Azam Khan Chanchal and incumbent MP Nabi Newaz are allegedly creating same situation in their area. Azizur Rahman said this infighting has weakened AL further in Kotchandpur-Moheshpur, a place which is a stronghold of Jamaat. Jessore AL general secretary Shahin Chaklader said feud between the former and incumbent lawmakers is not only evident in Jessore but also other parts of the country. The infighting among the lawmakers is somewhere visible and somewhere dormant. But the feud between the MPs in Jessore is an open secret. The former lawmakers who did not get ticket are not seen to attend any organisational activities. He said the non-cooperation of such leaders affecting the party negatively. Meanwhile, Chapainawabganj AL general secretary Mainuddin Mandal said former and incumbent MP of the district’s no-1 constituency Enamul Haque and Golam Rabbani are doing nothing good for the party. They think one another’s enemy. Both of them live in Dhaka. He said the situation of Chapainawabganj-2 is worse. There are two AL offices in the area due to infighting between former MP Ziaur rahman and his successor Golam Mostofa. It is learnt that the former lawmakers would like to get ticket again by proving their successors as failure to perform their duties. On the other hand, the incumbent lawmakers are trying to cling to power by showing dominance. They rivals do not show their face to one another. Shafikul Islam and Tanvir Imam are former and incumbent lawmakers of Sirajganj-4. As the incumbent MP is the son of an influential leader, he has cornered his predecessor. It is not the end of the game. The incumbent lawmaker has removed his predecessor from the position of general secretary of Ullapara upazila AL. Similarly, Sirajganj-6 former lawmaker Chayan Islam has been cornered by the incumbent lawmaker Hasibur Rahman Khan Swapon. Meanwhile, Meherpur-1 former MP Zainal Abedin and his successor Farhad Hossain Dodul are vying one another. On August 31, district AL working committee meeting was held. Miazan Ali, general secretary of the committee and administrator of Zila Parishad, and Zainal Abedin, former lawmaker and district AL president, jointly raised allegation against Meherpur-1 AL incumbent lawmaker Farhad Hossain Dodul. They termed Dodul as a non-political person. They further said the situation of party is being worse due to Dodul. The former lawmaker said his successor did not join the national mourning programme for his not having relations with the party politics. He accused incumbent MP’s nephew and district AL vice-president Abdus Samad Biswas of committing tender manipulation and grabbing lease of market. On the other hand, Jessore-2 former lawmaker Mostafa Faruk and his successor Monirul Islam are indulging in a cold war. This is the case with Jessore-3 former MP Khaledur Rahman Titu and his successor. The former allegedly does not extend any support to the incumbent due to infighting. The constituency where there is such discord and clash are: Meherpur-2 old MP Amzad Hossain and present MP Abdul Khaleque, Narail-2 former MP SK Abu Bakkar and present MP SM Asifur Rahman, Khulna-1 former MP Noni Gopal Mondol and present MP Ponchanon Biswas, Khulna-6 former MP Shohrab Ali Sana and present MP Sheikh Md Nurul Haque, Borguna-2 present MP Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Limon and his opponents, Barisal-4 former MP Mezbahuddin Forhad and present MP Pankaj Debonath, Pirojpur-2 former MP Shah Alam and present MP Ishak Ali Panna, Mymensingh-2 former MP Hayatur Rahman Khan and Present MP Sharif Ahmed, Netrokona-1 former MP Mustak Ahmed Ruhi and present MP Chobi Biswas, Netrokona-2 former MP Ashraf Ali Khan Khosru and present MP Arif Khan Joy, Netrokona-3 former MP Monjur Kader Quarishi and Present MP Iftekhar Uddin Talukder Pintu, Khagrachori former MP Jatindra Lal Tripura and Present MP Qujendro Lal Tripura, Brahmanbaria-5 former MP Shah Zikrul Ahmed and Present MP Faizur Rahman Badal, Dhaka-19 former MP Talukder Md Murad Jong and Present MP Dr Md Enamur Rahman, Dhaka-7 former MP Dr Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin and Present MP Haji Mohammad Selim, Narayanganj-3 former MP Abdullah Al Quiser and Present MP Md Mosharrof Hossain, Feni-2 former MP Joynal Hazari and Present MP Nizam Uddin Hazari.
