BNP may call a 72-hour hartal if the government does not allow its rally in Gazipur on December 27 and in Dhaka on January 5. Starting from January 5, the hartal will continue for three days. A source said the hartal may start from December 29 in case of any untoward incidents created over its January 27 rally. Awami League and BNP have resorted to counterstrategy over Dhaka and Gazipur meetings.
BNP is likely to shift its date for Gazipur rally with a view to giving a scope to Chhatra League to hold programme there. If section 144 is imposed, the party may defer its rally. Ruling Awami League has got permission from police to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 5. But opposition BNP is yet to get any positive signal about its programme in three places to be held the same day. In a reaction to AL’s permission, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the opposition wanted to hold programme at Noya Paltan and Shapla Chattar. The opposition leaders are waiting for the decision from authorities concerned. About both parties’ rally on Dhaka and Gazipur, Fakhrul said BNP applied for permission beforehand. But the ruling party later decided to hold rally at the same places and is creating a provoking situation. BNP will not give in to the government’s undue disturbance. Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Mujibur Rahman said his party will stand by BNP in its movement to topple the autocratic regime. If 20-party men take to street, the ruling circle will be defeated. We want election under neutral administration and peaceful exit on the part of the government. BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman said the situation is deteriorating due to instigation of AL. Asked about elaboration of deteriorating situation, he said “It will be heading to an identical situation which occurs in our country.” He, however, said the government may fend off any untoward incident. Abdul Kaiyuum, Dhaka city unit joint convenor, said they do not have scope for backtracking. The party is sure to hold rally at Gazipur. Khaleda Zia must go there. Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal said “Madam (Khaleda Zia) is determined to go to Gazipur. We must go. As the government is instigating in various ways, it will have to bear the responsibility for any untoward incident.” Khaleda Zia reportedly sticks to her decision on addressing Gazipur rally. She asked all concerned to take all out preparations in this regard. On the other hand, ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League is guarding the meeting area. Political sources say the situation depends on the Gazipur meeting. If BNP can hold the rally without any interruption, its next programme on January 3 and 5 will be peaceful. It is rumoured that BNP has taken strategic decision to defer its meeting by one or two days. In that case the meeting may be held on December 28 or 29. It is aimed at leaving the place for BCL to hold programme there. If the strategy does not work, the party will have no alternative but to go for tough movement. Sources said if BNP defers its rally, the ruling party will have no moral courage to obstruct the programme. Any initiative by the ruling circle to disturb the opposition rally will unmask its real face to the people. BNP managed to get permission applying same strategy. BNP would like to arrange a showdown on January 5 to send a signal to the government on its first anniversary of assuming power through an uncontested election. The objective of showdown is to pressurize the ruling circle to arrange a midterm poll under a non-party and neutral administration.
