AL on hardline:Daily Sun

Many leaders of Awami League had said in meetings and rallies so long that BNP is not a party of movement, and they will not come out in the streets. But the rulers have been gripped by worry as the leaders and workers of BNP really came down in the streets of the capital on Wednesday. The big gathering of BNP leaders and workers at Bakshibazar over the appearance of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia i
n the court is seen by the ruling party as a rehearsal of capturing the streets. Against this backdrop, they do not want to give BNP any chance to come down to the streets. Awami League is preparing to take a hard line to face the possible movement of BNP. Their attitude is very tough in this regard. AL sources informed that the policy makers of the party have decided not to give BNP any more concession after the incident of Wednesday. AL will be on the streets in the capital with new programmes ahead of observing the “Day of victory of democracy” on January 5. They will announce new programmes within a day or two with a view to retaining dominance in the streets. A meeting of the AL secretariat yesterday decided to hold before January 5, workers rally at four places in the Dhaka City and in five districts around Dhaka. And to keep workers active outside Dhaka directives have been issued to the MPs to stay at their respective constitutions. They have been asked to remain alert so that the BNP alliance cannot commit any sabotage in the country ahead of January 5. When contacted AL presidium member Kazi Zafrullah told this correspondent, party MPs have been instructed to remain in respective areas before and after January 5. The workers will remain active if the MPs are in the fields. Besides the activities of administration also gets momentum if the MPs are among the grassroots. About the movement of BNP, Zafarullah said, the motive of BNP has been exposed through the clash at Bakshibazar in city on Wednesday. They are creating violence in a planned way. If BNP tries to indulge in violence before and after January 5, then the AL leaders and workers will take tough action. Besides, there is no doubt that law enforcers will also take highest precaution to protect the life and property of the people. Another presidium member of AL Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin told this correspondent, most of the MPs will remain in their respective area on January 5.” BNP has sought permission to hold rallies on December 27 and January 3 and 5. A number of central leaders of the party threatened to go for tough movement unless they get permission for holding rallies. The venue where BNP wants to hold rally at Gazipur, Chhatra League also called to hold rally at the same day and same venue. Besides, Awami League called a rally in the capital on January 5. At a press conference held at Awami League president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city on Thursday, AL joint general secretary Mahbul-ul-Alam Hanif said Dhaka Metropolitan Police has given permission to Awami League to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. On the other hand, the administration has not given any decision regarding the permission to BNP for holding rally. When asked, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said BNP and Chhatra League want to hold rally at the same place and same venue in Gazipur and that created complication. We are thinking over the permission of this matter. Regarding rallies on January 3 and 5, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said always BNP indulges in conspiracy. That is why we are thinking over whether permission can be given to BNP considering the security of peoples’ life and property. On condition of anonymity a central leader of Awami League and also a minister of the government said BNP committed such violent activities in a planned way on Wednesday for which they will not be given any scope further. The leaders and activists of Awami League will face BNP in the streets. About the permission of BNP’s rally in the capital, he said during the appearance of Khaleda Zia in graft cases the leaders and activists of BNP burnt a vehicle of a lawmaker by which their plan and attitude have been exposed. In such a case, the act of giving permission will be unwise.” AL sources said that the party started huge preparatory works to make the programmees on January 5 a success. It will observe Jan 5 as a day of victory for country’s democracy. The party will hold four extended meetings in Dhaka before Jan 5 to make the day’s programmees successful. The ruling party will also arrange extended meetings at Narayanganj, Gazipur, Munshiganj and Manikganj to make January 5 programmees successful. AL has taken this decision from a meeting of the secretariat held at AL president’s political office on Dhanmondi on Thursday. Ruling AL is active to keep control on the streets of Dhaka city so that it has held several joint-meetings with leaders of associate bodies in December. In these joint-meetings, AL central leaders directed associate bodies to make programmees on Jan 5 and Jan 10 successful. They also asked the party lawmakers, elected from Dhaka, to be active in the streets. In the meantime, Dhaka city AL general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has vowed to resist BNP if the party tries to wage movement in streets. “It is appropriate time to give BNP befitting reply. We will no more remain silent. At the cost of blood, we want to give befitting reply to Khaleda and Tarique because we have achieved independence and came to power at the cost of blood,” Maya said in a rally on Thursday. Terming January 5 as a day of safeguarding democracy, Maya said that none of Al-Badr and Razakars will be allowed to take control of Dhaka on January 5 as Dhaka is a city of freedom fighters and peace loving people. Joy Bangla Muktijuddha League organized the rally at Bangabandhu Avenue to protest Tarique’s derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu.
