The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the vice-chancellors of the public universities decided in principle to bring university colleges under public universities in order to reduce session jams and ensure quality education. The decision came from a meeting between UGC top officials and the VCs held at the UGC auditorium in the capital on Sunday. Presided over by UGC chairman Prof AK Azad Cho
wdhury, the meeting was attended by the vice-chancellors of 36 public universities in the country. In order to bring the colleges under the public universities, the UGC also formed an eight-member committee to work out the process of bringing university colleges under the control of public universities. The UGC also asked the committee to submit a report to the UGC chief in a month. UGC member Prof Dr Mohabbat Khan has been made convener of the committee while its members are UGC member Prof Dr. Abul Hashem, Dhaka University vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Rajshahi University vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mizan Uddin, Chittagong University vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Anwarul Azim Arif, Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor Dr. Farzana Islam, UGC secretary Dr. Md. Khaled and UGC additional director (public University) Ferdous Zaman. UGC Chairman AK Azad Chowdhury said it is indeed a good decision of government. If the decision comes into action, it will help to reduce pressure on the National University and ensure quality education in these colleges. He further said that budget in higher education should be increased to ensure quality education in the country. DU VC AAMS Arefin Siddique said that the government colleges which have honours and masters courses are needed to bring them under public universities as they are failing to ensure quality education. If the decision is implemented, it would not put pressure on public universities as all the universities will equally share the responsibility, he added. Anwarul Azim said, “Chittagong University has the experience over launching the system in the past. So it would not be a problem for us. Besides, we have enough manpower and infrastructure to run the colleges.” Consented same view with the decision National University Vice-chancellor Dr. Harun-or-Rashid said it is a time being decision of the government. It is quite impossible task to operate NU through a centralized form in hackneyed way. He informed that at present there are 2154 colleges under the NU founded in 1992. Of them, 275 are government colleges and 1879 are private colleges where more than 21 lakh students are taking part in various courses. Vice-chancellors from other universities also consented to the decision of bringing colleges under the public university based on geographical periphery. They consented, but suggested ensuring proper manpower and infrastructure so that they can operate the colleges properly. The Education Ministry and the UGC took the move following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During her visit to the Education Ministry, the premier on August 31 asked the ministry to bring the renowned university colleges under public varsities for their smooth functioning.
