Missing Salahuddin in Shillong:Daily Sun

In a surprise development, BNP  joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, who has been missing for over last two months was traced at Shillong in India on Tuesday and subsequently held by police on charge of illegal trespassing. Salahuddin, after releasing announcement of violent movement programmes of the BNP from unknown places for over two months, went missing from Uttara on March 10 night.   H
is wife Hasina Ahmed and the BNP alleged that Salahuddin was picked up by the law enforcers, but they constantly denied it. Even BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia repeated the same charge and asked the government to return him.  At last on Tuesday afternoon, Salahuddin’s wife Hasina Ahmed disclosed that her husband has been traced at a Shillong hospital in the Meghalaya state of India and said he has talked to her.    According to the Shillong Times, “Police on Monday morning arrested one Bangladeshi national from the city. Police said the Bangladeshi national Salahuddin Ahmed (54) was arrested from Golf Link. The matter is under investigation.” Indian media sources indicated that Salahuddin was detained on charge of illegal intrusion into Indian territory without valid travel documents. Salahuddin Ahmed told Hasina that he was under treatment at the Institute of Mental Health & Neurological Science (MIMHANS) in Shillong.  He couldn’t say how he had gone there, but added, “Some people have left me here.” Immediately after her telephonic contact with Salahuddin, Hasina Ahmed went to Khaleda Zia to inform her of the matter and on return from the BNP Chairperson’s residence broke the news to the media. “I got a call from the hospital, which says that my husband Salahuddin wants to talk to me. Then I talked to him. He (Salahuddin) said, ‘I am alive due to the prayers from all of you. I am fine. I am in reasonably good health and convey this message to everybody,” she said. Expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah, Hasina Ahmed said her husband sought ‘doa’ from all while talking to her over phone. She also thanked the BNP, 20 parties and the media. “We are trying to reach Salahuddin as soon as possible,” she said and sought cooperation from all. Hasina Ahmed is trying to get the Indian visa as early as possible to reach Meghalaya to meet her husband. Salahuddin’s wife, however, said her husband did not tell her how he had gone to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences Hospital. When asked, whether she recognised the voice of Salahuddin, Hasina Ahmed said, “If I hear him even after 100 years, there will be no problem in recognising his voice.” BNP leaders, including party chief Khaleda Zia and Salahuddin's family members repeatedly claimed that lawmen picked up him from a house at Uttara on the night of March 10, an allegation denied by law enforcers and the government. Two days back, Khaleda Zia reiterated her demand for immediate and safe return of ‘missing’ Salahuddin Ahmed to his family members. “I state with deep concern that Salahuddin is yet to be found even two months after he was picked up by law enforcers from a residence in the capital. We demand his immediate release and return to his family,” she said in a statement on Sunday.”
