Maritime boundary disputes resolved because of AL: PM:Daily Sun

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said if Awami League had not been voted to power in the 2008 and 2014 general elections, winning the maritime boundary rights over Myanmar and India would not have been possible, reports UNB. “Questions could be raised whether the previous governments except that of Awami League and I myself had ever dared to file cases over maritime boundary disputes with India
and Myanmar. BNP didn’t have the courage for even demanding the rights to maritime boundary, and that is the fact,” she said. The Prime Minister said this when expatriate Bangladeshi journalists working for different print and electronic media in the UK called on her at Hilton Hotel on Park Lane in London on Wednesday afternoon. She alleged that although Bangabandhu had taken initiatives for gaining the country’s due maritime rights, after his assassination, Ziaur Rahman, HM Ershad, Khaleda Zia and caretaker governments did not take any initiative for establishing Bangladesh’s maritime boundary rights, leaving a vast marine area out of Bangladesh control. Bangabandhu’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, eminent expatriate journalist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, UK AL president Sultan Sharif and general secretary Syed Faruk were, among others, present on the occasion. Asked about the relationship of Bangladesh with the new Indian government of Narendra Modi, she said that her government believes in the Foreign Policy of ‘Friendship to all and malice to none’ which was outlined by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “We’ll have good relations with our neighbouring countries and we’ll solve problems with our neighbours like the maritime boundary...,” Hasina added. The Awami League chief said she and her party know it very well what needs to be done for the welfare and betterment of country’s people as it was Awami League which clinched victory in 1971 under the leadership of Bangabandhu. “But, those who grabbed power all of a sudden and through conspiracy, they only know to make money and change their own fates,” she said adding, “We’ve not turned elite just coming from the jungle. We’re the same what we really were and we’ll continue to work for the country.” Asked where she gets the inspiration from to do a lot of works, Sheikh Hasina showed the journalists a photo of Bangabandhu just beside her and added that she gets inspiration to carry out development work for the country and the nation from her father. The Prime Minister said that the relations with Myanmar and India remained intact even after Bangladesh’s victory in the maritime boundary demarcation cases. She said that if there is honesty, sincerity, devotion and sense of responsibility to people all impossible could be made possible and her government proved that in the last couple of years. In this context, she mentioned that her government attained the capability of generating over 11,000 MW of electricity and produced maximum 7403 MW of electricity this month. Referring to some demands of the expatriate journalists, including maintaining the existing UK visa procedures for the Bangladeshis, Sheikh Hasina said she had already discussed the issue with British Prime Minister David Cameron during her bilateral meeting. About their demand of voting rights in Bangladesh, she said that at present there is no problem for the expatriate Bangladeshis to be included in the voter list. Sheikh Hasina said any eligible Bangladeshis could be registered in the voter list when they are in Bangladesh but there is some complexities to cast their votes from abroad as many countries do not allow dual citizenship. But, she said her government will consider the issue positively as over 80 lakh Bangladeshis are working across the globe. Responding to a question on protecting the rights of female workers, Sheikh Hasina said her government increased the salary of garment workers, who are mainly female to TK 5300 from TK 1600 within four years. “There is no such example of salary increase of the workers across the globe even in the developed country,” she added. Besides, she said the provision of equal wages for male and female workers has been ensured in the new Labour Law. About maintaining the historical importance of Suhrawardy Udyan where Bangabandhu delivered his historic 7th March address in 1971, the Prime Minister said a cultural hub is being created in the area and an underground museum would be established to preserve the historic event of the nation. She said there is no other address which is so appealing even after 43 years and this historic Seventh March address has been translated into 13 languages and measures would be taken for the digitisation of the address so that no one could distort it. About their demand for the continuation of present drive against chemical tainted and adulterated foods, Sheikh Hasina said the drive would continue and no one will be spared in this regard. She also highlighted her government’s various steps for the spread of education, including providing free textbooks, introduction of midday meal, giving stipends to 1.33 lakh students from Primary school to degree level. The Prime Minister said as part of her election pledges of 2008, her government reached ICT facilities even up to village level and the expatriate Bangladeshis can contact their kith and kins through facebook, FaceTime, and Skype.
