Crisis over BNP city unit deepens:Daily Sun

The crisis created over the formation of the new city convening committee of BNP is deepening gradually due to internal conflict. Party sources said now Dhaka city BNP is going through a tough time, as a syndicate is ignoring the decision of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman about the formation of the new committee. It was learnt that the group led by BNP leader
s Mirza Abbas and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy want to keep grip on the city unit in their own hands. On the other hand, the supporters of former city BNP convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka are also desperate to continue their supremacy. Khaleda Zia approved the 52-member convening committee with Mirza Abbas as convener and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel as member secretary. Khoka, who is now in the USA for treatment, and former member secretary Abdus Salam are among the four advisers of the new committee. Khaleda Zia dissolved the previous committee led by Khoka and Salam following an allegation of their failure in gearing up the anti-government movement. The new committee was formed with the hope of being success in the new phase of movement. Both Mirza Abbas-Khoka factions are not happy with the new committee while Abbas is angry over the inclusion of Swechhasebak Dal president Sohel in the new committee. Now, the crisis in the city BNP is deepening gradually as the new committee didn’t start groundwork to form the unit committees though 15 days have already elapsed since the formation of the new committee. Mirza Abbas now wants to exclude Sohel from the post and include his likeminded person like Abdul Awal Mintoo, a local leader. “Khaleda Zia will discuss everything in a meeting with the leaders of the city BNP this week,” said a BNP leader. Party-insiders said Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman made Sohel as member secretary of the new committee. Asked whether the crisis is resolved, Sohel told daily sun, “There is no problem in our city BNP. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will sit with us this week and may give her directions for movement and for reorganising the city unit.” Replying to a query, Sohel said, “We are united along with our leader Mirza Abbas and want to wage movement against the government.” BNP leader Abu Sayeed Khan Khokon said, “There is some complexity in the new convening committee. I think the committee can’t start work due to a misunderstanding.” Sources said the party can not forge a tougher movement due to internal conflict among top leaders as Dhaka city unit has been split into two factions –Abbas group and Khoka group. “Mirza Abbas is violating direction of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman over the city BNP committee” a leader said. Another party source said Khoka, also vice-chairman of the party, may resign from the post of the adviser of the new committee .
