Tuba workers reject offer of partial wage:Daily Sun

Salary arrears for the months of May and June of the agitating workers of five garment factories of Tuba Group will be paid on Wednesday while the wage of July will be given by next Sunday. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association made the declaration at a press conference held at its headquarters in the capital on Sunday. The briefing was arranged following a tripartite meetin
g of the government, BGMEA and union leaders on the payment of wages to the sewing machinists. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, and BGMEA as well as labour leaders were present at the meeting. After the meeting, Tofail told the media that he has ordered BGMEA, the apex body of the country’s largest foreign-currency earning sector, to make arrangements to pay wages in arrears within a day or two. “We have told BGMEA to make arrangements for payment of outstanding wages and allowances to Tuba Group workers by tomorrow or day after tomorrow.” Acting President of BGMEA SM Mannan Kochi said, “BGMEA mediated in the dispute centring payment of wages for May and June to the workers of five factories of Tuba Group by Wednesday and wages for July by next Sunday.” Workers have been asked to turn up in time at BGMEA as the wages of the months of May and June will be given at 10:00am on Wednesday, he added. Brushing aside the BGMEA statement, leaders of Tuba Group Sramik Movement Committee, however, said they will not break their fast-unto-death until they get full wages and Eid bonus. Sources said Tuba workers have been observing fast-unto-death on their factory premises at Uttar Badda for the last seven days on the same demand. Following the week-long agitation, the government sat with labour leaders and BGMEA to break the stalemate. Kochi said the factory management will pay the wages for July in due time, by August 10, and the allowances immediately. Meanwhile, the demonstrators rejected to receive partial wages and demanded to give them the three months wages and bonus at a time. In a statement after the press conference, Shobnom Habib, member of Tuba Group Sramik Movement Committee, told daily sun that workers will wait for the next 24 hours. “If the workers don’t get their outstanding wages and bonus fully, they will take to the streets for a greater movement,” she said emphatically. Earlier at a pre-scheduled press conference, Moshrefa Mishu, coordinator of the committee said Tuba workers have held programme showing utmost patience. If the BGMEA and government do not solve the problems, the workers will wage country wide programme, Mishu uttered. Two separate protest programmes were declared from the press conference. Workers will hold a protest rally at all industrial zones across the country on Monday afternoon, said Mishu. “On Tuesday, they will besiege BGMEA building if their demands are not met by this time.” Five factories of Tuba Group are Tuba Fashion, Tuba Textile, Bukshan Garments, Tayeb Design and Mita Design have 1,600 workers. Outstanding wages and allowances of the factories are now over Tk 4.56 crore, according to the accounts department of the business house.
