An influential leader of pro-government doctors association Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) recently changed his mobile phone number. Asked about the reason, he expressed his grievance saying Dont ask for the reason. I have been facing disturbance due to incoming phone calls for last couple of days. Before getting appointment, the doctors started lobbying to get posting at the suitabl
e places. They are making calls with reference to known and unknown people round-the-clock. Some of them would like to meet physically. This leader said relatives of the doctors whose appointment came into effect yesterday started this persuasion. Expressing inability is not enough to get rid of the lobbying. They are very adamant. They are requesting me to get the job done by somebody else if I am really unable to do it. It is hard to imagine as to what will be done in future by the doctors having such mentality, he added. The newly appointed physicians are not only persuading the doctors leaders but also the health ministry and the directorate of health. An illegal posting business is being apprehended following this lobbying. Many doctors started desperate bid to get suitable posing even in exchange for bribe. Several officials of the ministry and the DG said they are receiving request from various levels. Some people are requesting for suitable posting by sending little slip. On Thursday, the government appointed 6,221 physicians. They were also imparted training on their duties and responsibilities through an orientation programme. A function was arranged at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on the occasion of 6,221 doctors who got appointment after qualifying in the 33 rd BCS examination. Although the doctors got appointment, they are yet to get their posting. It is learnt that the posting will be finalised within one week. Speaking as the Chief Guest, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim like previous occasion issued strong directive to the doctors to stay in the rural areas. A doctor who got appointment yesterday said My family members live in Dhaka. I have been living in Dhaka from my childhood. I took my education here also. My village home is located at Barisal but it is not suitable for living. As such, I am trying to get posting in the outskirts of Dhaka. Another female doctor said I have heard that the upazila health complexes are located at remote places. If I am posted in a remote village, it will not be possible for me to do the job. That is why I am lobbying for getting posting at a suitable place. The doctors leader said the government decided to give posting of the new doctors at the rural place to ensure healthcare service for the village people. It is mandatory for the newly appointed doctors to stay in the rural areas for a particular period. The health minister said the new doctors will have to discharge their duties in the village areas for two years and they cannot be transferred from their own place of posting. After expiry of two years, they will get posting at suitable place and opportunity of higher training. The minister said the facilities of roads, electricity, markets, schools and colleges are available in villages like cities. There are good residential quarters for doctors in every health complex. The villagers can eat formalin-free foods. You (doctors) will eat formalin-free foods. The villagers are not well-off like city dwellers. There are big hospitals in the cities for rich people. But the general people rely on you. Nasim asked the doctors not to resort to strike and work abstention. He said the silly matters can be solved by table talks. He said a law is going to be enacted to ensure uninterrupted health service by the doctors. Sometimes, the treatment may be wrong. But assaulting a doctor and vandalising hospital are not warranted. About the posting, Director Admin of Health Department Dr Ehtesamul Huq Chowdhury said The newly appointed doctors have joined services under heath department Thursday. We have now started the process of giving them posting. This can take about one week time. Meanwhile, the Health Department DG Prof Dr Din Mohammad Nurul Huq claimed that there was no apprehension of lobbying business over the posting of newly appointed doctors.
