Two supporters of two key candidates in Sherpur Sadar Upazila polls were killed in post-polls violence at Bhagalgar Purbapara village in Charpakhimari union yesterday. The deceased were identified as Faruk Hossain, 32, son of Hanif Uddin and a supporter of Awami League-backed candidate Sanowar Hossain and Azer Uddin, 38, son of Mamtaz Ali and a supporter of Jatiya Party-backed candidate Ilias Uddi
n. Faruk's brother Sohel Mia was also injured in the incident. Police said Faruk was a polling agent of Sanowar who swept the polls held on Thursday. Locals said Faruk's father was going to a local market when Azer waylaid him at around 7:30am yesterday and asked who he voted for. An altercation then ensued between the duo and Azer beat him. When Faruk and Sohel heard the news, they rushed to the spot and tried to save their father. Azer then stabbed both siblings, leaving Faruk dead on the spot and Sohel critically injured. Sohel was immediately whisked off to Sherpur Sadar Hospital. As the news spread the area, relatives of Faruk and locals caught Azer and gave him a good beating, before leaving him in a paddy field near Brahmaputra river. Advertisement Following information, Sherpur Sadar Police reached the spot and took Azer to Sherpur Sadar Hospital where the on duty doctor declared him dead. Akbar Ali, chairman of Charpakhimari Union Parishad, said a tense situation was prevailing in the area following the murders. All the family members of Azer fled the home while a pall of gloom descended on the house of Faruk after the incident. No case was filed yet over the killings, said Majharul Karim, officer-in-charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station. The bodies were sent to Sherpur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Mehedul Karim, superintendent of police in Sherpur said the situation was under control and a woman named Josna was detained in connection with the incident. Additional law enforcers and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed at several points to avert post-polls violence, he added.
