Dhaka police move to stop smuggling:Daily Star

No rawhide-carrying vehicle would be allowed to leave the capital for three days following Eid-ul-Azha to prevent the smuggling of the item, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said yesterday. He, however, said vehicles carrying rawhides would be allowed to enter the capital during the time. Benazir was addressing a press conference organised at the DMP media centre yesterday to d
isclose the security preparations by police ahead of the Eid and Durga Puja.   Eid-ul-Azha is set to be celebrated on October 6 when thousands of animals will be sacrificed across the country, including the capital, generating a huge amount of rawhides.  And every year, countless hides are smuggled out of the country. According to calendar, the Dashami of Durga Puja is slated for October 4. Police would be deployed at 219 puja mandaps across the capital from September 29, the DMP commissioner said. Apart from setting up CCTVs at 21 cattle markets in the capital, police would remain deployed round the clock to ensure people's security there, Benazir said. Advertisement Police would also use special equipment to identify fake currency notes at the markets and look after the security of the huge cattle-carrying trucks entering the city ahead of the Eid, he added. The DMP boss also urged the cattle traders and other authorities concerned not to use the roads for selling cattle.  Additional police would be deployed in the capital to ensure security during the festivals as a large number of people leave the capital then, leaving their homes empty, Benazir said. Police would also remain alert at the important shopping centres of the capital during the upcoming two festivals, added the top police officer.
