rs of the bordering districts are flowing over the danger mark due to heavy rain and sharp rise of water levels in the rivers of neighbouring Meghalaya and Tripura states of India, said Amirul Hossain, executive engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, on Wednesday. Fresh areas in Purbadhala upazila of Netrakona, Fulgazi upazila of Feni and Raninagar upazila of Naogaon went under water as flood protection embankments collapsed in the areas due to onrush of water from upstream, he said. Kangsha river in Netrokona, Khowai river in Habiganj and Surma in Sunamganj were flowing over danger level respectively by 215cm, 33cm and 40cm. People living in some low-lying areas of Naogaon, Singra upazila of Natore district and Kurigram district have been marooned due to sudden flooding. In Netrakona, fresh areas of 70 villages were inundated on Wednesday as flood protection embankment in Dampara area collapsed. Thousand of people of 400 villages in Durgapur and Kamlakanda upazilas took shelter on high lands as their villages were inundated due to rise of water level in the river Someswari on Tuesday, local sources said. Ferry service was suspended in the river due to strong current. Earlier on Tuesday, over 70 villages in Purbadhala upazila in the district went under floodwater. In Feni, around 40 villages, including Fulgazi Bazar, were inundated on Wednesday morning as the embankment along the Muhuri river collapsed. In Naogaon, fresh areas in Raninagar upazila went under water, causing immense sufferings to people. In Kurigram, the flood situation deteriorated on Wednesday, inundating 15 more villages. Ropa Aman and other crops went under floodwater again in the district. The current flood situation in Netrakona, Sunamganj and Habiganj may continue in the next seven days while the situation in Naogaon, Natore and Feni may improve in 2-3 days, said Amirul Hossain, executive engineer of FFWC. The water level in the rivers surrounding the capital may rise in the next 72 hours, said a bulletin of FFWC.
